What are the differences between the Skyline R33 GTST and the GTR, apart from another turbo and a slightly bigger engine? both apparently produce 206kws, though we know that the GTR unofficially produces more, but is a GTR really worth the extra cost? GTSTs are like $20k and GTRs are more than $40k.
I figure with the extra money just mod a GTST to be like a GTR, cheaper option?

I don't know about the R33 but the R34 GTR has a 6 speed gear box instead of 5 speed in the GTST. There are a lot of technical differences in both engines. The GTR is also heavier not sure how much but I am sure they weigh about 1500kg? The GTR in my opinion isn't worth the extra cost, as they are like a status symbol as OVL087 mentioned.

Mate of mine in WA has just thrown a RB26dett into his R32 gtst, ran a 12.4 @ 114mph at Kwinana. He said that this conversion has cost him about $4000 after he sold off a few things.
As most will know, that MPH is good for about an 11.7, he's getting some of those Nitto's soon.
I would think that this a viable option for those not wanting the outlay of the GTR, his car still has all the luxuries. Oh and he changed the box to one from an RB25.

I have seen that conversion on some jap auction sights.
I had no idea they would be that fast though, DAMN !

yeah everything is standard, engine wise, 302rwhp.
Although he said it does stand out a little, carbon fibre bonnet, signal stripe, wheels..
I told him he should go the opposite and go completely sleeperish.

Depends what you want to do with it.
If you're serious about driving hard, the 4WD makes putting that extra power down to the ground a lot easier. Maybe not such a difference at the drags (where extra weight would counteract it) but on the circuit it means you can put the full power down out of a corner much earlier.
Several years ago I was up at Wakefield Park watching a club day. One bloke in an R32 GTR was chasing IIRC a hotted-up front-engined Porsche. He couldn't drive to save his life, but the car was getting him out of trouble; he'd take hopeless corner lines, then floor it and the thing would just rocket out of the corner and catch up with the Porker.
Awesome car! I've seen R32 GTRs in reasonable condition around the $30k mark, so if you really want a GTR you can get one much cheaper than an R34 GTS-T and for not much more than a top-shelf R33.
You can also think of it this way: you want an early '90's fast 4WD road car with great engineering, distinctive styling and a great competition heritage. You could pay c. $95k for a Porsche 964 Carrera 4, or a third of that for an R32 GTR in comparable condition! Sounds like a bargain now, doesn't it

09-09-03, 17:03 GMT+10#13 the RB26dett takes fewer mods to get more power out of it.

09-09-03, 18:34 GMT+10#14 The R34 Neo spec Skyline with the RB25DET puts out 205 fwkw I believe,so it's not much different to the Rb26's 206 kw.
The R33 however,puts out 187 Kw not 206 KW.
