Ive been told by my friend (he owns a AW11 mr2 1987 S/C) that despite vls having good power that when it comes down to it they are only decent for going in a straight line.... they cant handle for ****..
im yet to buy myself a calais turbo, but surely with a set of coil overs/sway bars etc they wont be that bad... but my friend assures me he'll easily out handle me round corners .. any thoughts ?
any recommendations on suspension kits ??
thx

tell your mate he's a w-anker, he doesnt have a clue what hes talking about and he drives a girls car too
any car can be made to handle real well. I dont remember an MR2 wining bathurst back in that era.
good shocks, springs, bars and tyres and it will handle well.

they will always handle like **** compared to an mr2. they are family cars, not sports cars. you can spend heaps on suspension and it will be quite good but i doubt it will ever blow your socks off!

well a vl isn't going to out handle a mr2. remember a mr2 is a mid-engined sports car which weighs around 300kg less and it has a better weight distribution than a vl. you can make a vl handle realy well but the mr2 will probably still be the better car on windy roads. but who cares when a nice vlt will easily have twice the amount power that a mr2 does.
1 way to improve ur weight distribution is to put in a sr20 instead of the rb30. its bin done to 300zx's and it makes their weight distribution close to 50/50.

You are of course referring to both cars in stock form aren't you? Yes an MR2 has the engine at the back and it suffers from having a lack of weight over the front wheels and this is very noticeable when you drive at any kind of speed. I dont know about the rest of you but Im not a fan of a front end that feels like its "floating".

Why the hell would you even consider this? A 50/50 weight distribution is not necessary for a street car. Were these 300zx's that had this 'elective' surgery preformed on them race cars by any chance?
Dark VL - Id listen to HSVSUX, he knows what he is talking about from experience. Id say your mate is just trying to make his buzz box sound better cause he knows the VL is quicker.

well the cars with sr20's in them are race cars. i have spent a heap of money on my suspension and i have tried to keep up with the celica in my pic. well the celica easily out handles my car but the celica has fully ajustable koni suspension so that plays a big part. hopefully the mr2 has its original suspension and if it does this will mean its all worn out so if the vl does have some suspension mods it shud make things a little interesting.

31-08-03, 05:44 GMT+10#11 Yeah i agree that this guy is a wanka and drives like a girl, i mean if you start loosing it in a vl around a corner and can't correct it or drive out of it because a) it has too much power for you, and b) you can't handle the suspension that was std. issue... you need to be reconsidering buying one, cos quiete frankly go buy yourself a mule, and stay off the roads... I agree though, compared to any car of the day they handle mediocre, my mates r31 silhouette handles like a gift from god compared to the VL yet he can still drive my car equally as hard as he does the silhouette... for anyone that knows how hard reevsy drives, you'll understand... once your used to how the car handles and build up your skill level, it won't be so much of a problem for you, and then as everyone is saying, a good suspension upgrade will have you drivin even harder... my advice learn to drive a VLT bare bones first, build up your skill then help yourself out with better suspension, nothing substitutes for experience and practice.

31-08-03, 08:17 GMT+10#13 Ever heard of HDT ? Tell Brock that VL's don't handle.Sure they might not be a modern design but any car can be made to handle.Stock against stock is a different story.I've driven both in stock form and yes the mr2 does handle ok, but just keep up with him then blow him away when the road straightens up! lol

31-08-03, 12:06 GMT+10#14 i think HSVSUX's car is perfect testament to the fact a vl can't handle superdooper even with good suspension. not because it doesnt handle well but have you seen his boot??? its far from standard!

a vl can handle like a charm if ur wise
a fella up here in qld had a great setup coz he was a track racer like hsvsux , unfortunately the car got written off , but the running gear etc now resides at drifter_69s house , vls can handle good.
i can garauntee even if u dont touch the springs/shocks or struts , but if u replace evry rubber bush , in the front end and the rear , with new quality nolathane bushes , ur car will handle 300% better than it does now.

31-08-03, 13:15 GMT+10#17 Yeah vl handles alright just the fact that all the suspension is 15-17 years old doesn't help.
The car wouldn't handle the best by todays standards but with brand new "Standard" setup i see no reason why the car couldn't handle.
webber: u said that if u learned to drive a vlt u would be a better driver, i think if u learnt to drive a rear engine/rwd car and learnt how to drive it hard u would be a better driver.
Having heard stories from a mate (who used to own a nsx) they can be very tricky to drive hard and once u lose it can be very difficult to recover and recover quickly.

When I lowered my car, I did 90% of the bushes in my car... a VERY worthwhile exercise. not only does it handle WAY better, but the steering also has a much better feel about it...
