Anyway after spending days on trying to figure out the idling problem of the car i think, i have found the culprit. Ive just taken off my exaust manifold and all the exaust ports are dry except for one(the one closest to the firewall). It appears to have water in the port i believe. Does this sound like a cracked head to you??? Im really not sure but i have been loosing coolant, so it makes sense to me. It sounds like a ill have to remove the head.

I just finished removing the head off the vl and well to be honest it all looks ok. On two of the head bolts i noticed some of that milky fluid around the threads of the back four bolts(near that exaust port). I noticed its got a cheap monotorque head gasget on thier, ive got a sneaky suspision thats going to be the culprit. Are the monotorque head gasgets really that bad, as i have noticed alot of people bagging them in the past. Im going to put a geniun nissan head gasget on thou. Do you need to use a sealing compound on the thread part of the head bolts at all??? Like do they go into the water jacket area at all? The head still has the machining marks on it where it was resurfaced, so i have alot of trouble believing its cracked(but you never know). Ill get it pressure tested anyway i think, just for piece of mind.

yes always use a genuine nissan gasket , monotorque and others are crap make sure u thouroughly clean both the block and the head , b4 putting the gasket down , also spray the gasket with HYLOMAR. u will get a small pressure pack of it for about $12 no sealant needed on the headbolts , give em a good cleanup if u wish. get ur head looked at aswell , just for peice of mind as u say.

Its an auto. Ill get the head checked out then ill know the source of the problem i think. Head was only recoed at 5000ks but the engine has been sitting for a while thou. when you clean the surfaces do you give em a quick block down with some 800 grit sandpaper and using crc to get the surfaces spotless??

Well i took the head down to the machine shop today and i quote he siad its got more cracks in it than a piece of swiss cheese. He siad bin that head and get another one. Three opions later with the same result i got my spare head out of the roof, to get a quote on getting that machined. Then the miracle came. They quoted me $350 to fix the head. The i was offered i brand new head with valves springs cam lifter, ect for $500. Ive laid down a depostie and are going to pay it off over a few weeks. Not a bad find if i do say myself.

he might have been tellin u some white lies more often than not if a head ctacks its just one pretty long one down the cam tunnel. either way 500 is a great price for a recoed head , with all its bolt ons too , mine cost me $550 for the same stuff. no need to give it a rub down with emery paper , just a quick wipe off with petrol to get all grease and **** off , give the holes etc a good blow out in the head with a good air compressor , coz there will be some machining leftovers in there.

The heads not recoed thats the thing. Brand new from holden with receipt for everything. Apparently was bought by the owner to do a big hp engine and he never ended up using it cause he sold the car. So it was offered to me for $500. I laid the deposite on it today. might take a few weeks to pay off but oh well.
