I'm trying to disable the torque converter clutch solenoid on my auto. (see http://www.ozperformance.net/viewtop... 4aec6b6c7c3c (http://www.ozperformance.net/viewtopic.php?t=13345&sid=565f626078e89d29fa614aec6b6c7c3c)). there's a small plug with about 8 wires running into a black box which i think is the auto control unit? its directly above the ECU. however from the wiring diagrams i have (gregory's) there aren't enough wires. i've run a switch to the dash and need to snip the circuit - its a light blue wire. My questions are: 1) is the black box the auto control unit, and if so where are the other wires? 2) where do i snip the light blue wire? near the loom behind the a/c compressor? which of the 2 wiring harnesses visible near the firewall is it on? at the moment i've cut into the light blue wire going to the black box i described, and it seems to have had no effect whatsoever. Thanks.

1) No its not the auto control unit. Not quite sure what you mean but from memory the only black thing above the ECU is the heater/aircon box.. there is a plug over that end too. 2) the auto ECU is on the DRIVERS side. if you look under the steering wheel a little to the right, there is a panel you can remove (where the fuses are on a VB-VK). the auto computer is right there. take off the black panel under the dash that covers everything and then you can get to the two screws for it.

Firstly, what you are looking at sounds like the wiper/washer control unit located behind the drivers side kick panel. The auto control unit is located under where the fuse panel for the VB-VK used to be,it is a silver box, also all you will succeed in doing to your car by disconnecting the TCC solenoid is turning it into a 3 speed auto as I have done it at one stage by simply unplugging it but I ended up reconnecting it,I have heard this stuffs the transmission up. You probably have seen my reply in another post, mine was a rebuilt transmission as well so I ended up fitting a 5 speed manual which has proven to be stronger than the auto.

RB30DEVL, unplugging/cutting the lockup clutch solenoid does NOT turn it into a 3 speed auto. even if you unplugged the overdrive solenoid it'd still have overdrive - it just would skip 3rd. if you dont believe me - unplug the auto computer and go for a drive. BTW, he cant be looking at the wiper/washer control unit if it's above the ECU like he said... come to think of it its possible that box he cut is the control box for the power antenna? i never had one but i recall there being a plug for it there on a calais loom i had..

Yeah, it does skip 3rd........you still have a bit of 3rd, but not much.......my n/a did that 4 a while till i fixed it properly......

thanks people - big help all of you! RB30DEVL thanks for the words of caution, but at the moment it annoys me so much i'm prepared to take the risk. besides i've got a switch on the dash to re - engage it on highway, so its only for small street stop start driving that i'm doing this. If anyone else knows of possible consequences please let me know!

stock calais hop under ur car , on the left hand side of the gearbox u will see 3 harness plugs which connect to the tourque converter solenoid, the overdrive cancel solenoid and the downshift solenoid. the torque solenoid is i beleive on the bell housing, the overdrive and downshift are both on the gearbox member itself. instead of cutting wires , just unplug the solenoid connection. natho - yeah it will be the power antenna module box thingo that he has cut safer that way cause u can hook it up without having to re solder wires etc etc this will dis engage the overdrive function. rb30devl - was it the overdive cancel solenoid u unplugged to therefore make it a 3 speed , or was it the torque clutch solenoid?

ok. GMH has 2 light blue wires running to my auto ecu. (and another 2 with other colours aswell). One of them is on the bigger plug on the auto ecu, the other is on the smaller one. can someone do me a favour and tell me which one is the torque converter clutch solenoid? thanks! ps. thanks OVL but i have a switch on my dash as i want to be able to re-engage while i'm driving. (open road down south, etc).

i have sold my VL now but im pretty sure its the larger plug. put a switch on it - it drops revs quite a bit on the highway, and the lockup clutch works quite well once doing 100+. its just below that there isnt enough torque..

k i snipped the blue wire on the larger harness connected to the auto computer. it doesn't do ****, and now the stall squeals when i turn the circuit off. i think it was the wrong one. any ideas what it was? is the torque conv. solenoid the blue wire on the smaller harness?

i dont have a VL here i can check for you at the moment, but i do recall there being more than one blue wire. checking the gregorys book it calls the torque convertor clutch wire 'blue' and others 'light blue' and 'dark blue' so maybe look for a mid-blue? sorry i cant give you any better description, if i had a vl here i'd just go check, but i dont!

The torque converter clutch solenoid wire off the control unit is Lt. Blue (pin 2 from memory). The dark blue ones go to your power shift switch and your throttle valve sensor. If the o/d cancel solenoid is disconnected it will simply go from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th. doesn't stay in 3rd for long though. hope this helps.

spoke to 2 mechanics and they recon the clutch is disengaged only when the power is 'on'.. i.e. i'd have to supply the circuit with power constantly. and to do it right means heaps of mucking about. i'll just drive with pwr on till i get it looked at.

Firstly, how come when it did it with mine it selected up to 3rd gear only and not 4th? Also I have seen the wiring diagram for this setup and if memory serves correct the o/d cancel solenoid is connected in parallel with the TCC solenoid and I think the hydraulics for the o/d and the TCC solenoid relieves the pressure from the o/d hydraulic circuit cancelling it totally whereas this doesn't happen with the VL turbo due to the non-lockup torque converter setup and it cannot expel fluid back to the sump as it can with the N/A setup. The only thing I noticed that didn't change is the "ratio" of gears,it ran the same as the power button was on (no power lamp on) but it never went into overdrive,I have heard these transmissions have several gear ratios,1st through to 3rd on the power ratio and 1st through to 4th on the economy ratio which apparently should never be used around town.

i had mine unplugged for a while, still was a 4 speed, just didnt have lockup, which is the sorta 5th that you hear/feel engage at bout 70kph. The tc is locked when 12v is supplyed, if you cut the wire going to the solenoid and put a switch in you will be able to lock the converter at higher speeds , i.e. 100kph, by flicking the switch. RB30DEVL - maybe you disconnected the od solenoid by mistake?. Cheers

87calais do you think you could post a pic of the auto computer loom as it enters the computer on your car, showing the wire you put the switch on?

Cheers correct no need to even put a switch in there , that lockup/5th gear in reality is about as useful as a 2c coin , u really need to drive for 1000km straight to even see the slightest amount of any effiency increase in fuel economy. just keep it as u can turn the power mode off , ie go into 4th gear while ur on the hwy , thats all u need to do , driving round town keep the power on. cheers

i didnt have a switch there, i just unplugged the harness down under the car near the bellhousing. I could still select pwr if i wanted . sitting on 100kph it revs about 2 or 300 rpm higher than standard. Cheers
