Looking for comments on practicality and legality. Firstly, relocate the AFM to be as close as possible to the throttle body. According to a post on aus.cars a while back, this will improve throttle response. Secondly, I don't like the wheel arch cold air intake idea; too much chance of FOD (Foreign Object Damage), no ram effect and you still have a long inlet tract (= more pressure drop). What I'm thinking of is, from the engine out: throttle body AFM (minus filter screens) filthy great 90 degree bend PCV pipe pipe connected to bottom half of modified standard air filter box air filter (K&N?) secured in said air filter box (just side clips?) top of box connected to a bonnet scoop bonnet scoop to have a coarse mesh to stop the worst boulders coming in. Note that the scoop would actually be attached to the engine, so it would stick out through a hole like the old XY Falcon GT "Shaker". (And alternative would be to have a flexible joint between the PVC pipe and the air filter box, with the latter attached to the bonnet). - Would there be sufficient clearance for engine movement? - Would there be too much weight on the throttle body? - Would I get the book thrown at me for setting something like this up, which, unlike the wheel arch cold-air intake idea, isn't easily hidden. - Would I need an engineers' report (I'm an engineer by training myself, but have worked in IT for years). All feedback gratefully received, cheers, Malcolm PS: I've finally found an avatar  Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Let me get this right....you're not wanting to do a cold air induction cos you might get something sucked up, BUT you're going to remove the AFM filters? Was there something I missed?

Mate ,my cold air is directed to the front of the car(bottom half of bumper)and has picked up nothing but small stones. The K&n filters are strong enough to stop nearly everything (except Cats unfortunately). So don't worry about that.Mine has been on for 3 years now and no probs. 8)

If I still had them in place, fine, I'd go the wheelarch route.

I too was concerned about stones and **** smashing into my K&N filter. soo i used a bathroom shower drain hole, with stainless steel mesh i picked up from a local steel joint. this protected it from all kinds of ****. Every month or so i'd check my air box for debris, the worse i got was 1 bee, and a few small bits of gravel. Worked like a charm. However i ended up ripping it off as it ****ed around with my LPG system to much. Yes bag me for using LPG.

If I still had them in place, fine, I'd go the wheelarch route hrmm correct me if im wrong but doesn't the *air filter* come before the *AFM mesh inserts*, meaning that unless u weren't running an *air filter* from the beginning, how would the stones make their way to ur AFM anyway? I'm yet to see a stone go straight through a pod or panel filter and get sucked into an engine.. As long as u keep a decent, well mantained air filter in place either under the bumper or on its original position, *the airbox*, u shouldn't have much to worry about other than maybe vacuuming the bottom half of the airbox out once a month just to get rid of the little bits of grit and gravel/grass that mite make their way up the piping. Or if u really do think that some rocks mite get super sucked straight through the filter, leave one of the mesh inserts in as a safety measure.. happy cold air inductioning. farewell O l l i e Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Yer nothing would get through a K N filter I drive on a few dirt roads and never had a prob couple of small stones if it gets through your filter it could go through ya mesh screens

doesn't need to be a stone, you'd be surprised how delicate the hotwire's are inside the AFM especially when heated up, it only takes some dust particles to grab onto it, either causing damage or making the AFM not function as it should, warranted the rear screen on the AFM only keeps dust in, so remove that, but for the sake of one hundreth of a kilowatt, don't remove your front AFM screen.

I'd like to bump this thread as im interested in doing a similar modification to my N/A.. Have any of you considered running the pod to your front bumper with a pipe that connects into the afm.. something similar like this http://i16.ebayimg.com/01/i/03/c7/d3/03_1_b.JPG ?? Woudlnt this be more effective than the airbox cold air induction mod with the k&n air filter? I mean placing the pod in a good location under the front bumper or near the front bumper or something where it's getting direct cold air.. wouldnt this perform better than airbox cold air induction? thanks regards, rob

pod filters really need a housing for them to work at there full potential. the main problem with them is sucking more hot air than cold. Ideally the filter has to be as close to the throttlebody or turbo as possible to achieve any benifit. most of the problem is actually pressure drop from such a long pipeing system and stress on the engine from the filter itself. I have just converted to turbo but i am in the process of making a hole new design for the vl cold air intake. hopefully this week my car will be painted and engine in so i can figure out where to sit it all All i can say is that system will never beat the airbox system unless you make a housing for it and deterr the engine heat

just a thought for u guys mounting pod filters behind ur bumpers my mate had 1 on his vn mounted directly behind his bumper he was driving through the city 1 day and he drove through a huge puddle that was really deep anyways the pod sucked up water in to his engine making the engine compress the water and he blew a conrod out the side of his block and snapped the main shaft inside his gearbox into 2 pieces ended up having to get a new motor and box cost him heaps Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

the mesh is there to stop **** when the filters off. the mesh won't stop anything, have you seen how big the gaps are between the mesh!! anyway, it sounds different' not quite sure i would destroy a bonnet over an NA mod though unless it was a dirty big blower. it would be easily legal in VIC, idiot cops would try and tell you otherwise, not cause its the law, but because it is humerous to jerk some types of drivers around. you can put the AFM wherever you want as long as you use it. you can put something sticking outa the bonnet if it isn't too high. go see the road office ppl. to me though it sounds just as restrictive with a 90 bend in it.best solution is a 3" pipe coming straight out from the TB then curving slightly so it hits the bonnet passengers side and come out. then put a big dirty pod on it.
