Hey, just thought i let of i bit of steam here..
i went for a diving leason today and i have to say what a big waste of money it was. I've been driving for nearly 11 months now and thought i should go to a driving school to get a second opinion. Anyway the main reason i was going was to learn reverse parking which i still havn't got right yet due to me being scarred of scratching my rims. The driving instructor asked me how many hours i had done i replied that i had done 150 recorded hours. (I ran out of pages 4 months ago) Anyway he says ok, we will just see how ur driving briefly. So i drove for about 15mins a lot more carefully than i usally am because i was driving a car i wasn't familar with. Anyway he tells me to pull over and he goes through what i'm doing wrong. He starts off by saying That i'm driving incrediably well with no mistakes or anything and then he goes on and says that i'm driving how an experienced driver should drive which is good but he then added that he wants me to drive like an L plater. This is what got me cut like what the **** is the point of driving like how i did 11 months ago when i'm going to be driving unsupervised in a months time anyway?
Then he went on trying to teach me a cornering method which was total bull**** and i will never use. My parents always taught me to go wide before a corner and then take the corner so u don't have to slow down too much. Unless it was a main road where there was room to move for other cars i would always corner like this. Anyway the driving instructor told me this method was completely wrong and what is the right way is to approach the corner right next to the gutter and turn into the corner. This meant but i would have to slow down to like 5km/h making me feel unsafe and me being a hazard on the road.
Anyway after all that he didn't teach me any parking in the hour nor any tips that i found useful or anything and i wasted $39.
Sorry about the rant but for people on their L's don't go to the driving schools as they only try get u to drive like your average old bloke and rip you off.

Hrmm, on the test there is a way you have to drive which is differant to the way you actually drive once you have your P's in my experiance, sounds like the instructor is showing you the way to drive to pass your test, NOT necessarily how to drive once you have your licence, so maybe it wasnt such a waste of money, after all thats his job to help you pass.
IMO I would drive how the instructor told you to for the test, I changed my driving pattern for the test and passed with flying colors, once I had the licence was a differant thing.
And if theres a next time ask him if you can focus on parking and nothing else, if he says no, either change your rims and practice or find a new instructor

He has a duty to teach you like that. My instructor taught me carefully.. Then on the way home after I got my license he was driving and he said forgot everything and just drive how i like (within reason). We puched it home doing 80-90 in 60 zones...

My driving instructor taught me in the same way. It's essentially the way you must drive to pass the test with the least trouble.
I've seen him twice (when i had my license) whilst driving after that. Once was when I hung it out past a stop sign (without stopping) and left rubber up the road! Hung a thumbsup out the window and watched as his L plater **** themself.
The other was coming around a blind corner, flogging the car a bit hard and hung it out a little, once again (hopefully a different L plater) **** themselves, I just waved and smiled.
Ahhh, my young stupid days of driving.
I miss my license

You have to know how to drive like a granny in order to pass your test.
That means
- constant head checks.
- having 2 hands on the wheel at all times, shuffeling during cornering etc.
- going 5km/h under the limit.
- etc etc.
Thats what the instructors want to see and thats what will make you pass. You need the instructor to teach you this, otherwise you can fail right away.
Get your licence, and then you can drive with your hat backwards, 1 hand on the steering wheel and have the seat on a 60degree recline whilst pumping your music.

Nah i didn't speed, kept both hands on the wheel, headhecks, etc was all ok he just tried teaching me a cornering method which isn't even examined in the test. I'm complaining that he taught me a method that he likes but didn't teach me stuff i wasn't good at.
Yeh i'm not going to go again. Just going to be careful, practice on witches hats before i practice with cars.

i never had a instucter as such, my dad taught me howto drive, and i had 3 or so lessons wit my sister just for that 2nd opinion, both of them said i drive too laid back, they said to drive by the text book for my test, and then wen i have my ps i can drive how i want (within reason) and now that i have my Ps im glad i listened to them.

take it as a learning curve till you get your p's - then drive to your own style - provided you keep it safe hehe -

19-07-03, 20:48 GMT+10#12 If you are driving along a street and take a left turn, the method your folks taught you is incorrect and you will loose points (or however its done in your state). You are not allowed to drive along, swerve right (no matter how small the swerve is) and then take the left corner, it is considered as 'illegal'.
You must keep as far left as you can and take the corner at a safe speed without vering in the other direction. It does not matter how you do it after you are on your P's, but whilst an L Plates you have to do it by the book, or you will fail your test and you are the only one to blame for that...
Just remember, your folks go their license years n years n years ago and probably dont know any of the new rules of the roads, and i can bet they will fail both the written and driving tests if they were to take them again. Your instructor is always right

19-07-03, 21:03 GMT+10#13 Ok what happens if u don't swerve right? But don't go right next to the gutter?
Hang on, do different states have different L books? The NSW one dosn't teach u much on driving at all. Its mainly about what signs mean, etc. The driving aspect is up to ur parents. So how is that fair to rely on ur parents who passed their tests under different rules and then the RTA expect L platers to be doing the right things on the road?
Also just a quick question..
For the P's test, u can use your own car. Well will they allow me to do it in my car with a load exhaust, rims, lowered, bigger brakes and a big fat sticker on the back saying: Caution: Vechile Frequently Sideways. Apart from that i have good tyres and all my lights work

19-07-03, 21:34 GMT+10#14 yeah i suppose they would let u. Unless there is sumthing blantly wrong with the car. They are covered by insurance they don't give a ****. Might be better to do it in driving instructors car
Yeah u ain't around to sweve who do u think u are Ari Vatanen ?
If u wanna go outside, inside, outside u can do that but u have to check rear view, blinker, side mirror, blind spot everytime u deviant more then 1M.
hahah city time ... bring on the biatches

Well that would be why driving lessons arent a waste of money........
Sorry to say mate, but your oldies are unwillingly teaching you their bad habits......thats why there are more driving tests and courses out there, to teach new drivers the "correct" way to drive and not their parents way..
If you remain quiet and open your ears at the next driving lesson you will definately learn something, it may just save your, or someone elses life one day in the future.
I believe we all should have to update our skills in a test every 10 years, it would stop most of the ****heads who use roundabouts the wrong way, and keeps your own driving skills up to date.......so long as its done correctly in the test, who cares how you drive later on, but the tests will make better drivers out of everyone.

lol my dad is a wog too, its that funny when he gets a bit of road rage and starts swearing his lungs out saying something stupid in his accent.
i got lucky cause my dad has already taught 3 of my other family members howto drive, and so by the time it was my turn he was pretty relaxed (and been the only guy )
but i dont think the rta examinor would be impressed if ur taking ur corners wide with speed, they like to see u driving like a granny (within reason) and once u got ur Ps they dont mind if u drive with 1 had on the wheel or watever. just do everything how the instructer says, he does his job for a living..

20-07-03, 16:06 GMT+10#18 I wasn't speeding into corners. Just doing a safe enough speed so i went into the corner without having to pratically stop.
Because i only lose a point or so in the test i'm not going to drive the method he showed me only because i would have to change me driving method at the moment and i don't feel safe doing it his way. This was the only thing he thought i wasn't doing right so if i drive without other mistakes i should pass.

20-07-03, 16:24 GMT+10#19 Why take the chance, u gotta ask urself.
Who gets paid to be a driving instructor ?
Who is rta qualified to become a driving instructor ?
Who knows how the test is run thru years of experiance ?
U, your parents or the instructor ?
U say u will feel unsafe changing ur driving style, obiviously got as good of a driver as u think u are if u can't change such a simple thing like that.
hhehe ur "trying" to drive like a circut driver i can see that, but the street isn't a track. Street is unforgiving unlike a track, either change ur way of thinking or u most probably will finding urself hitting a tyre wall so u speak, but on the street a tyre wall in a pole that will kill u and all ur friends and rip ur car in half.
Its sad but true, but on a lighter note.
A corner is best taken from the outside to the inside and then to the outside again.
Don't steer-in until you can look into the exit of the curve. Stay on the outside until then.
Reason for that is if u steer in too early car tends to run wide on the exit, and if u carry in too much speed like doing it, lifting accelerator/braking will upset the cars balance and that is enough to send the car into oversteer.
hehe If u wanna impress ur instructors
Before turning into a corner
Brake
Down shift and release clutch
Both hands on the steering wheel
Apply the throttle so much as to go through the curve with a continuous speed
Then steer in when u see the exit of the corner.
Power out of the corner.
Im sure they would love that going on 2 lanes of traffic every corner, coz that is the only way to u can outside-inside-outside turning on the street.
Have i made any sence ?
