i didnt think they were going to make it at first glance.... very glamorous and out there....
I think i could build a monster of a Monaro with 215,000 and keep it at 1600kg with 500kw at the engine, blower or TT with change left over for a smick VLT
over priced and overrated in my books

meh
I never believed they'd produce it for real, I'm not sure why. But they never really advertised it that much. If they were serious about it they would have.
yeah over priced, in the end it's just a VY Monaro.

HSV intended to restrict build numbers to 50
they didnt need to advertise it, they didnt want to sell more than 50 and they already had all the orders they were going to take...

they were going to make it, it they werent they would not have taken orders for it, and then go through all the hassle of refunding and apologising to the people. a firm order means there was a deposit taken, at a standard 10% deposit, these people forked over at least $20k. it would be a logistical nightmare, not to mention the bad taste it would leave in the customers mouth... probably would not trust HSV again....
over priced??? just a vy monaro??? thats like saying the mercedes benz SLK GTR was just a C200....look around on what else has those performance figures and see what they cost.... before you start talking about boosting the **** outta your VLs and producing the same power, these are stokko car out of the factory and with a warranty. i have seen some guys spend over $40k on a VL.... and still at the end of the day have a 20 year old car worth $15K.
this machine looked ultra tough, went ultra hard, the 400KW was in quiet street trim, passing all emmission and other laws. if you had the race car version it was even tougher...
you guys need to realise that this car, if they made it would change australian automotive history, imagine a company in this day and age that cared more about building GREAT cars than the bottom line, if anyone should have built this car it was HSV. this is the sort of car that we would have looked back on 20 years from now and said HELL YEAH!!!
they didnt build it because they were not gonna make enough money.. pure and simple, and that my friends is why accountant are ruining the (car) world.

they didnt make it because they said they wouldnt turn a profit on it because the price of parts manufacturing etc went up and they kind of underestimated pricing.
Why are they going to make cars that aren't going to make money? They're a company, not a charity.

06-07-03, 11:48 GMT+10#10 You wanna spend $215,000 on a Monaro, buy and import an '04 Pontiac GTO when it comes out...

06-07-03, 16:54 GMT+10#11 the HRT427 would have been an excellent car in my opinion! I hope it being canceled doesn't change it's right to enter into the procar series
but just to make a point, they were charging $215,000 for a stroked/bored Gen3 with minimal options, im sure a CV8 could be stroked/bored and safely be made to 427ci at much less then the cost of a $58,750 for a CV8 PLUS $156,250 for stroking/boring.making it safe
Come on HSV, what's going on!!! It doesnt make any sense to me at all considering it would cost at most $80,000 to safely get an LS1 to 427ci, $30,000 for the little HRT427 goodies and so fourth, I think it's a lie in HSVs department because they want to build something even better and feel this project would limit funding for it! this is just my opinion and is not necessarily the opinion of all members of the forum
but in theory, I could build my own HRT427 for just under $170,000

06-07-03, 20:38 GMT+10#12 Go on then, and sell it for 215k, and you make a profit of 45k......

12-07-03, 03:37 GMT+10#16 my suggestion to those who had ambition to buy this type of car.... buy a cv8 and modify it.
Im sure if you throw 100 large at a workshop, they will make it better than the HRT427 with a bit of turbo/supercharge.
A collectors car hence the orders, but i think it suffered from too much red tape than actual cost flaws.... emissions and so forth. Waranty might be an issue, not that the cars would be driven that much, but stored away.
I wonder whats going to hapen to the working prototype and any other carbon copies of it. that would be worth a dime.

12-07-03, 08:05 GMT+10#17 the parts they used in the HRT427 would be worth 200K

12-07-03, 18:19 GMT+10#18 i dont think any of us here would actually buy this sort of car. we all know you could spend less money and make our own beast that would be as quick / powerful
i started this thread just becasue of the fact that car companies are now run by accountants rather than the engineers / race drivers / visionaries that started these companies.
you have to ask yourself whether the phase III GTO (or similar cult cars) would have ever been built if this was the case bach then...
i have to say it but the jap car makers (nissan in particular) are the ones who are putting some awesome stuff out there (350Z, new skyline R35 V8 300KW) really taking a chance and it is a company still run by engineers and enthusiasts.
personally if i had $215k to spend on a car i would buy a brand new XR6 turbo for $45K and get the boys from APS to get over 300KW outta it for about an extra 5 grand. then with the 165k extra i would buy a rental property..... an appreciating asset rather than a decreasing lump of steel and that actually produces an income....
this however is not the point of this thread.

12-07-03, 23:53 GMT+10#19 i still can get over the fact that people were and still are calling this car overpriced.
Think about it for a sec, there is the initial cost of the monaro $58,000, then start adding on the cost or state of the art race style dry sumps,
a Le Mans secp C5R engine (the bare blocks are worth around 18k alone from memory),
carbon fibre inlet trumpets (the motec type go for abou 5-7k),
all the custom suspension bit which is most of the suspension (as the car was designed as a super tourer to compeate with the likes of the GT3 Porsche)
all the masses of Motec electronics and gadgets
the torsen diff with magnesium housing
the brakes.
you name it this thing has it and for people to say that it was over prices is stupid.
You go to a workshop and try and build a car like this which is made to corner, brake, stear and go hard for this sort of money, well let me and HSV know about it.
