If anyone these questions can be/have been answered in other threads please direct me as I can seem to find anything on it.
Ok like a lot of people on this forum I want to under take am auto to manual conversion. I practically know nothing about drive trains so please bear with me. Are their any advantages/disadvantages of using a 32 turbo 5 speed? their a crap load cheap than VL 5 speeds, but are they any chop? also if i get a 32 5 speed gearbox will i need an R32 flywheel etc? Will a standard VL turbo manual tailshaft bolt onto a R32 gearbox? also will the standard 5 speed vl speedo work on a 32 box?
Is the n\a VL clutch slave and master cyclinder good enough to use for a turbo application?
thanks
R32 5 Speed from RB20DET, gearbox is itentical to the N/A RB30 box.
So you have to use the smaller flywheel/clutch combo.
N/A tailshaft will obviously bolt straight up.
If you have serious power/boost, get the RB25DET or RB30ET box, they will take alot more abuse.
Slave and master cylinder are same between N/A and Turbo motors.

OOPS my error i ment the MX7 is the RB25 gearbox as strong or stronger then the MX7 cause my mechanic is having trouble sorcing part for my gear box at the moemnt so we are looking at other avenues
thanks in advance for your input guys

MX5 ??
Probably the MF5
but yeah, dont use a rb20det box, they are the same as a NA vl box, just different ratios.
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
You will soon notice even how much smaller in size the RB20 box is! You also have to modify the yoke on tail shaft as the RB20 takes a small one of those. I use one to limp around on while my MX7 was getting fixed. Again, parts for MX7 are getting rare... Although, you can source parts from the Nissan Nevara's 4WD. Basically same box but with transfer case. Gears are stronger though. Any way, when I heard my MX7 was ready, I thought I would give this RB20 box a bit of curry. First snap into 2nd on boost, and that was the end of her!!!
Well i have a N/A 5spd and the bearings are F****d, so i am currently getting a 5spd out of a N/A R32 skyline put in. But from what i have read not many people have anything good to say about the R32 boxes. Have i justed wasted my money on the r32 box. Or are they just too weak for the VLT's. Would it be ok in a N/A VL.
Were you comparing the price of an RB20 box to an RB30E box?
If the price for a VL 5 speed is a lot higher than what it is for just the RB20 box you will usually find that the VL 5 speed comes as a conversion (i.e. pedals, flywheel, tailshaft, master & slave cylinders, gearbox mount & crossmember, clutch & pressure plate assy, etc.
You shoudn't really pay more than $600 for a good VL 5 speed box or more than $900 for an N/A conversion, the RB20DET boxes I have been quoted on going at around $650 but that was a couple of years ago.
How are the RB20DE N/A boxes compared to a N/A RB30E box, strength wise? Is it better cause it's out of a newer car? Or is it worse cause the RB20DE N/A has less torque?
ok ok, here is my 5 cents worth on the subject, Ive got an rb20det with the r32 5spd box and ive raced heaps of people and have had no trouble with it, yes the MX-7 is a bigger and stronger box but 2nd hand they are expensive from wreckers, the N/A vl 5spd i blew like 5 of them in my old NA vl until i spend 2grand building a strong NA vl box!
you havent wasted your money on the R32 box for your NA, ratios are different, not sure how they will go but it shouldnt be too much of a problem. The R33 box is stronger than the MX7 from what i have heard, and at roughly the same price, little bit more for the R33 box, i think if youre going to be making any sort of power the R33 box would be the go.
