Hi, my 5L VL sed was starting to run just a bit hotter than normal, so i emptied all the water out and filled it entirely with cooolant. I think it ran even hotter? I replaced the thermostat - put the old one in a jug of BOILED water and it didnt budge, it stuck about 25% open. I put the new one in - with the coil/spring/copper bit on the engine side and the pointy end on the radiator side, now my car over heats like crazy, from the day i installed the thormastat. No leaks of anything like that, just really really hot, i have to stop driving it till i work it out. Its especially bad at 100kmh,t akes about 5min to get too hot, 60-80 it sits on half. Anyone have any suggestions at to what would cause this?

Take it out and get it serviced by a radiator repair place. I had an old Bentley that was overheating due to a blocked and rusted up radiator. A service fixed it and the overheating problem was gone.

you said you put in a new thermostat yes? and that your old one only opened a little bit ? try this - take off your thermostat completely and run your car without it - if it runs nice and cool then your 1st thermostat was rooted, and the second one you bought was to restrictive. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

They look EXACTLY the same - is it possible the car joint didnt give me the right one? ie it requires a different temp to trigger it? Its getting DAMNED hot i cant imagine it doesnt open?

OK ..... did you or did you not flush the coolant system, i.e. pressurising the system and releasing the bleed valves????

bloody hell - got radiator back from a clean, says it been under enourmous preasure, not hot, but preasure. So start checking for crank case preasure, or possible head issue to create preasure in cooling system )though i havent losing any water)....easy....pull out BRAND NEW thermostat put in a pot of over boiling water, that thing is COMPLETELY stuff and wont open one tiny bit - grrrrrr I should have tested the new one? Well i will be testing the new one when i replace it later today.
