? Hey i'm running 14psi and have a turbosmart type III blow off valve.. I want to lay a bit low in town if you know what i mean so i'm thinking of taking the type III blow off valve off and replacing it with something a bit less noisy.. so i've heard about a screamer pipe but i don't know what it is or what it does ???? can someone enlighten me on this topic please... any ideas for a blow off valve with less of a whooooooosh sound and more of a pop off valve sound .. ?????? please any answers would be helpful Grant

Screamer pipes are f&^*ing noisey Like a jet taking off hehe... Why don't you just loose the BOV altogether? is it just atmo venting? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

type 3 supersonic ? PPPPSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HAHA !! DU DU DU... u dont want screamer pipe.. correct me if im wrong but screamer pipe comes off wastegate and runs down and rejoins back into exhaust.. but some people dont bother to rejoin it and just dump it to atmo..meaning very noise aiight.. im pretty sure im on right track.. u want less noise.. so i think either ditch the BOV completely or, maybe sell it and get urself a less noisy type one... maybe opt for a plumb back BOV or somethin. Others will have more info but there's a satrt. Peace Ol

Screamer pipe is the external wastegate exhaust pipe that legally should be joined back into the exhaust before the cat. However to be a proper "screamer pipe" it does not join into the exhaust, it dumps straight out into the atmosphere creating a noise similar to a Jet at full noise when it starts to take off. Very loud, very cool, very illegal, very annoying after the first week.

I thought a screamer pipe is an exhaust dump pipe. I have heard of ppl calling a screamer the pipe from the turbo wastegate, but only if it dumps to the air and doesn't rejoin the exhaust system. My thoughts: screamer = wastegate or exhaust dump directly to the atmosphere without any muffling from a muffler or cat. Would this be correct??

Hey, Ok so now i know that i don't want a screamer pipe lol....ummmmm I have heard some skylines with real nice pop off valves. They don't make the wooooooooshhhhhhhh sound they make some other weird ass noise.. I want to have my calais sounding similar to that...ANy ideas on where to start looking ? If that fails i might just put a type 1 in it and seel the type 3. Thanks for your replies. Grant )

Actually, a screamer from the wastegate is not a bad thing. You can gain a few extra kw too. They aren't as bad as you would think. Because they only dump exhaust gas when the turbo starts to spool you can get by in everyday driving by trying to keep off boost. But when the turbo spools and you come on boost, it is very loud.ie.screamer. My car will have a screamer (although not when I get my mod cert and rego, and I think it will be ok as my turbo will probably not start to spool untill 3000rpm anyway. :P A plumb back bov is as the name suggests, plumbed back to the compressor inlet and does not release air to the atmosphere.

Hey grant, as VK turbo said, with a plumb back valve, the air is vented back into the intake before the turbo but after AFM. They are generally alot quieter. Go to GFB.com.au for a more info, books suck... cheers mick

Have a listen to a screamer pipe equipped VL when it's on boost and listen to the sound it emit's. I don't know if infact it has been dyno proven or whatever, but apparently the screamer being plumbed into the exhaust cause's turbulence and what not, hence restricting the flow.

so if i got a plumb back valve would any performance be sacrificed from changing it from what i have now ???? a Type III turbosmart ????? or would it just be quieter Cheers Grant

A screamer pipe simply is a small piece of exhaust coming off the wastegate (in most cases external wastegate although it can be done with internal wastegates aswell) that is not plumbed back into the exhaust system but instead dumps/vents to air. It is illegal as it is allowing the dumping/venting of exhaust gases that have not past the catalytic converter (ie will not pass EPA) aswell as being too loud (noise pollution). It was mentioned that the screamer starts to dump or work when the turbo starts to spool - this is wrong. The screamer (or more specifically the wastegate) starts to open (and therefore scream) when u have reached the maximum boost level you have set NOT WHEN UR STARTING TO SPOOL, otherwise you wouldn't be generating any boost as u will be loosing it due to an open wastegate. Hope this helps Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

My car has a screemer pipe and what everyone is saying is right it does come from the wastegate and dumps the exhaust into the atmosphere as the car comes on heavy boost. It is a minor performance enhancement cause you dont have that exhaust going back into the exhaust system and creating turbulence. They are also very loud which i personally like but they are only loud when you come on heavy boost and the wastegate begins to open to stop the turbo overboosting. It can be fun cause it can scare people if you boost past them

for those who havnt seen a screamer pipe plumbed into an internal wastegate... http://www.geocities.com/vlboostn/screamer.html?1050391758365 cost me $330 to have a custom 3.5" stainless steel dump pipe made and fitted with a locater & v band clamp, plus a screamer plumbed in. to do this we had to build a bridge inbetween the wastegate housing and the turbine outlet. btw it will be plumbed back into the exhaust Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Wouldnt having an external wastegate with screamer plumbed back into exhaust be the same as having an internal wastegate?? Almost the same thing happening isnt it? Or am i wrong....plz clear this up for me Cheers, Chris

plumb it back in about a meter down the exhaust, the idea is to keep the turbulance away from the turbine.

There is some info on Screamer pipes on this site. screamer pipes (http://www.torquecars.com/tuning/screamer-pipes.php) I dont think they are very practical - most tracks have a DB limit and they are too loud for round town use.
