Champion Australian drag racer Andrew Cowin's condition following an overnight non-racing related accident in the United States has improved.
Cowin was admitted to the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee (last night Australian time) with severe head and internal injuries suffered when he fell five metres from the ladder of a crane he had climbed to take photographs from nearby the hotel at which he was staying.
Originally listed as critical and on life-support systems, Cowin's condition was upgraded to serious early this morning. Since then, the 23-year-old has regained consciousness and has spoken to doctors and the hospital staff.
"Andrew is still heavily sedated, but he has regained consciousness and has begun to talk," his father, Graeme, said. "His first question was 'We're racing this weekend, when can I get out?'. That's a good sign, but we are still worried as Andrew's condition remains serious."
Cowin is expected to stay in the hospital's intensive care ward for the next few days, before being moved to a general ward for recovery.
