i was dragging in townsville drags last night and after about 5 races, 3rd gear would grind and not go into gear, it was like when the gear box heated up. But i dont think its the synchro's cause all the gears are fine when im driving normally. Could it be the gearbox oil or the coolent or anything

You could try a heavier oil but a recommend using the clutch to avoid grating noises. Is this a once off or something you can repeat?

Mine did that and the 3rd/4th synchro hub and ring was totally smashed. The input shaft also has a needle roller bearing in it in which the mainshaft journal spins, the needle bearing had chewed out, went through the gears and smashed the whole synchro assy and chipped some of the gears. Mine was intermittant when I first bought the car ,it was a pain to have to totally rev it out in 2nd gear and shift it into 5th in the city,it would not shift into 3rd or 4th at times,it ws just lucky I had a whole motor and box in my first VL I crashed and I swapped over last easter.
