Door Pods? :|
By this i guess you mean custom building door mounts, and if so...yes of course.
How? Depends what design you're after...

yeah its possible, takes time though. You can use stuff like chicken wire to mould it how you want it then fibreglass over that or you could make a multilayered cardboard design of it and plaster over that than fibreglass it. It all depends. I really havent made any myself but i will be doing it soon so ill be trying to learn some more into it as well
Cheers,
Chris

The ones from JB HiFi are quite good for the money. It is true that they are MDF with a fibreglass topsection, but so are almost 90% of other designs, even custom jobs.
To make some yourself is very easy, but unless you have some basic power tools and wood-work/fibreglass skill I'd just buy the premade JB jobbies.
This is the way I've made mine in the past, this is the very easy description and can be changed to create more elaborate designs.
Steps:
1. cut a piece of 8mm - 10mm mdf in the shape you want.
2. use the template that came with the speaker (or measure the mount-hole size) and cut out the hole in a second piece of 8mm - 10mm mdf, now draw a circle around this about 15cm from the inside hole and cut along this out - you should be left with a ring that is 15cm wide that your speaker slips straight into.
3. Now cut out some little square pieces of mdf @ 15 x 15 or so. Use these pieces to join the mounting ring to the bottom piece form step one. (you can make one side higher then the other to angle the speakers for better sound.
4. use some fibreglass resin to glue the pieces together. (i use the resin cause its strong when glued, but you can use wood craft glue and a screw also)
5. once dry get a piece of old sheet, t-shirt or cloth of some sort (clean not dirty)
wrap this around what you have so far, keeping it taught. The pod will now start to take shape. staple or glue the fabric into place. ( I start by first stapling the fabric into the mounting ring and then pull it out over the pod, wrap it around and staple it onto the back of the base.
6.Now mix up some fibre glass resin ( I add some talk powder to thicken it and make it easy to work with, but this is not needed) and paint this over the fabric keeping it nice and even - you don't need to make it really thick.
7. repeat this until you have applied about three coats, letting it dry in between.( the more coats the stronger)
8. Once dry give the pod a good sanding with some rough sandpaper.
9. Mix up some normal body filler (the pink stuff) and apply liberally to the pod - try covering it with a medium coat.
10. Once the body filler is dry, use some meduim to fine sandpaper to smooth the pod.
Once this is done you should have a smooth and good looking pod. All you need to do is cover it in some vinyl and mount, screw the pod to the door, and mount the speaker.
I have done this on my last two cars, as it is easy and gives a pro look to your homejob install.
You can add other elements to the pod, but remeber to add them before you resin. I have added spaces for the tweeters and crossover, and on another I made the speakers flush mount by making the mounting ring about 50mm wide not 15mm and adding another ring with on top that is exactly the same size as the outside diam of the speaker but only 10mm wide.
Like I said, it is easier to buy the pre mades, especially for only 150.
Hope this helps

Nice idea
Iwas trying to make it easy to understand, and not miss any steps as there are so many ppl in these forums who flame you for things like that.
Anyhoo, it should be easy even for a novice to understand now
It took me ages to make simple pods, and I tried them all, even making it completely from mdf and shaping it with a jigsaw and sander :? .
But this is the easiest aprt from a simple piece of mdf with a hole for your speaker.
I hope it helps some ppl.

Thanks for the complements.
If you are going to try it, try not to mix up too much resin at a time as it goes hard quick. Oh and take your time - if you are going to go to the effort you might as well do it right.

21-03-03, 15:55 GMT+10#14 Tell you what.
If ppl are really serious in here about making pods, I'll make some taking photo's for every step. That way you can all see how easy it is.
Actually I have to do a full fit to my VK, so I'll take photo's of the whole build, including laying all the cables, fitting cd player and amps, and building a 4th order bandpass box with perspex window and neon light.
I can then create a pdf of all the steps with photo's so that you can download and print off.
I'll start this weekend with the cabling and door pods and go from there.
Just tell me who I need to email the pdf to so that it can be posted for everyone.
Cheers

geez, u wanna make mine then? :P I need to make front door ones to accomodate 2 6.5" woofers + 1 tweeter per door. Tweeter is a home hi-fi dome tweeter. I may need to get electric windows in the front doors so i can get the extra room cuz the window winder comes a fair way down....

it is possible, just depends how handy you are. You can buy pre-made door pods from Pro Pod Australia(me thinks Autobarn sells them) for $100 which is available in a range of styles and colours. I actually used there pods as a mould for mine so whenever a friend needs some we use that as a mould  mmmwhwhaha
if you know what you are doing(fibre glassing etc.) it isn't too complicated ya know(except i hate sanding fibreglass)
have a look at this tutorial, it is a help
