Just wondering what sound does a Jatco make when its on its last legs? I ask because today my box made this really high pitch noise, almost like a scream, when under full power and it didnt like moving under power in 1st gear for about 50% of the time either. It seemed to leap forward, then just not transfer any power to the diff once it hit about 3500rpm. I dont know what a slipping auto sounds/feels like but if I had to guess Id say that is what it was doing. Its sorta got me worried a little bit but if it dies, just have to do the manual conversion I always wanted. 8)

Mine just started to slowly slip more and more over a two day period until I had to drive 25kms to Transtyle after work with no 2nd gear(very embarrasing and annoying). It made no noticeable noise at all beforehand.

pete that noise id say is it flaring , they normally dont make much noise that gives it away as about to die.

Flaring is basically slipping. The engine revs don't match the power getting to the ground. Like slipping the clutch without wanting to whilst accelerating

Mine first started when the gearbox was slipping.... then this progressed to when it slipped, there was a quiet grind.... then the slip would last longer and the grind would last longer and get louder and then when i was a the lights one day, i just spun and spun and was just grinding and grinding.... the worst feeling in the world! $750 later, recond gearbox was put in :-/

mines a manual, but sometimes get that screaming noise. i think it is air leaking in near the turbo intake.

Really? Have you found the source of the leak at all? If so what was it and how did you fix it? Going to take the VL for a strap tonight and see if the box is still cranky.
