On my 86 N/A VL Berlina the Odometer and trip Meter have just stopped. everything else on my dash is working though (Speedo, Tacho, etc). I've taken the dash cover off to check for disconnected leads but to no avail. My Gregory's manual is blank on the topic. The only thing i can think of is that the entire Speedometer cable needs replacing but i dont wanna have to do this unless completely necessary.

Well from the sounds of things the odomotor cluster has just stoped working. This happend to my N/A 6 about 2 months ago. I basically took it to this guy and he ripped out the dash, and found that the plasic thingy in the back had worn through so that it wouldnt go around anymore. He said the car must have seen at least 400k's or some ****... 8O lucky motor has had rebuild :| Anyways go to your wreakers and get a new dash, and make then ENSURE you that the Odometer cluster it working completly. then if you're in the know you can replace it yourself, or get someone more qualified to do it. Good luck.

If the dash is still showing your speed whilst driving you most likely have stripped a gear internally, if taht's the case just buy a second hand one, if u get a calias one, it will cost you more but much less hassle. If you get an exec or SL one, just pull it to pieces and swap the speedo **** with your one. Simple When i got my calias dash, i gave my old one to my mate who'd stripped a gear, swapped it over, it's all good.

At some stage or another ALL vl odometers stop. Its a fault in the gears in the speedo and happen whether the dash is worn out or not. Mine stopped when the car had only done a genuine 97 000kms! I had the speedo repaired by VDO Auto Instruments in Adelaide (at a cost of $70) and the car has now travelled 170 000kms with no further troubles. Apprentley, onced fixed properly they shouldnt stop again. Because of this problem, you should never believe the odometer readings unless the car has service history. I have seen cases where the odometer was left broken for years and only fixed before the car was sold. My mate bought his VL with 170 000kms on it from a yard. It was later found the car had really done close to 400 000kms. He was one pissed off dood!
