Yeah, Need a deck. But I'm not spending a trillion bucks on all the fruit, I just need something basic that'll power some decent 6" splits and perhaps some 6x9s depending on the health of my bank balance afterwards It's only a small car. I was gunna just get the scabbiest deck I could find but I know people who have done that and regretted it... or even worse, they bought sony
I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions, say with 350 bucks as the upper limit, though I'd prefer not to spend that much (just on a head unit).

Dude, you have to spend that sort of money if you don't want ****. Specially now that new units are comming out. Unless of course, if you can get an old model if shops still have them... they'll be on discount probably. Just hunt down a base model from any of the major players... Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, Clarion, JVC, etc. They'll all be pretty much the same at that sort of dosh. Just be sure to get one that is MOSFET 50W per channel... even then it won't do splits any justice. If I were you, I'd plan to get a 2 or 4 channel amp in the near future. Cheers dude

OK so in other words I'm getting **** - I'm not spending more than that just for friggin music. I've got better things to waste my money on.
I'll tell ya how it goes in the end.
Cheers anyways.

Start with something entry level with RCA outs. That way when and if you feel like it you can get a 4 channel amp( 4 x 50WRMS at least) that will run your splits and 6x9's.
A good cheap headunit should cost on the lower side of $300. I have seen a few clarions that are $250 with an RCA out. This is what you should aim for.
Try and steer clear of the really cheap brands, as although they may sound good in the shop, once installed they will sound like crap (they skip very easily and they aren't that good on power).

Yeah thats exactly right VK. The problem is, the timing might be a bit off... I'm not sure what stocks stores still have of last seasons entry level models. If they've got them, get one. Otherwise you'll be paying in the high $300's for a new season entry level i think.

i think the Panasonic CQDF302w would be an excellent choice considering your price range... they should be quite cheap because they have just been superseded i think... A great headunit in my opinion

Look at the JVC range, you can get something heaps decent for $350... by the sounds of it you're aren't going to be running you stereo at a sound off or trying to impress the nation with the best quality stereo money can buy
Take a look at Pioneer, JVC, Sony, Panasonic, Kenwood, etc All make very decent stereos and around about your price range. Personally I don't like the Sony decks in general, but some people do...

My mate had a sony, it ****ed up straight away so I'm not too keen on that. They look cool but My dash is ugly tho (Eeew fake woodgrain, damn sixties) so it doesn't matter. I'll have a bit of a geez around tomorow. Sure I can find something.
I just want something that'll cover the noise of my fart-cannon exhaust until I can be bothered replacing it
