light flywheel would also probably make this happen too .. the flywheel is what keeps the engine turning between strokes (and generally, without ignition for a few secs also, either on a miss or stall/kill) .. if its a light flywheel spinning with low momentum, and gets a combustion on the wrong stroke, it could send it backwards ..
Yes well my utes flywheel is lightend and it idles at about 700rpm, so your theory sounds good so far as it wont do it if i rev it before i turn off the key.
I doesnt do it when i drive it, only when mates do, im used to it now and stop it from doing it without even knowing it
Perhaps thats why the old "classic" v8's tend to be given a good rev before turning em off .. particualry in movies .. i just thought it was a carby thing .. but maybe its to stop that kind of thing happening..
What about running backwards for some time rather than 'running on' as described by several people.
I had a motorbike whose engine backwards for a minute.
I know at work we used to have a Detroit(GM) diesel turbo motor it was 2 stroke and sometimes it used to run backwards! kinda weird but it did happen, dont know how good it was for the turbo though
about ten year ago i had a suzuki rm50 motorbike it used to start bacwards u could push it bacwards and it would start like normal
it was fun tricking mates with it i would start it backwards then call em over to have a go of it
they sure got a surprise when they let the clutch out and it went bacwords instead of forwards
