I have a very wierd electrical problem with my daily driver '84 N12 pulsar. Recently, whilst driving, the car will get like an electrical spike, lasting for between 3 seconds and 10 minutes. The headlights will go extremely bright, all interior dashboard lights will also turn bright, and my stereo turns off (all power lost). Next thing, the lights return to normal, and the stereo returns to power. Also, the idle drops about 150-200 rpm during this time. This will usually happen when the car has been just started, and most recently, any time it pleases.
Because of this, recently I turned on my low beams and heard a zzzzzt noise, and both low beams went off. The high beams and parkers both work, the fuses are OK and so is the bulb.
I realise it is some kind of short or elec problem somewhere, just not sure where to start checking. Any ideas or pointers before I give up and take it to a pro?

It ended up being the regulator/alternator, sometimes letting more than 14v thru, causing everything to go brighter and the stereo cutting out. Changed the alternator ($30 wrecker job), new globes and fuses, and it is all fine.
I am no longer the guy in the busted pulsar driving with his high beams on all the time
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
