What temp thermostat have you got, no kidding theres two types, a hot and a hot climate one, if you have a cold climate one then thats probally why its running hot, just ask Nath on these forums... Duh, of course, im going bonkers Quote: if you have a hot climate one then thats probally why its running hot

..like I tell everyone -get a decent temp guage so you know exactly what temp its running at first. 2/3 on a factory temp guage with no numbers on it tells you nothing really. You could waste money on replacing the head gasket, radiator work etc... when a 'real' temp guage may tell you everything is fine. I hate factory guages - heard of many an engine going to heaven through faulty factory temperature guages!

the head is sweet, had it checked out. I have an early opening, or cold climate thermostat. (new) And yes HOLD64 I reckon that the factory guages are ****house. So are there any other suggestions apart from these..... cheers.

I haven't thought it through because i'm tired but wouldn't a cold climate thermostat open later than a hot climate one. If so that could be the cause of your problem.

yeah I was just thinking the same aus880.. makes sence to me (although i'm not too familiar with cooling system). You should purchace a digital water temperature guage. tap the sensor into the cooling system somewhere, possibly where the old sender is and run the wire into the cabin and have ur digital display mounted on the dash. Nice. Ollie

as carcrazy said theres at least 2 types of thermostats available , 180 and 160deg farenheit (i think) but as hold said get urself a good autometer etc and then u will know exactly what temp ur running at.

yes, i meant hot climate, had just come from the pub when I wrote last msg. Wasn't in the best form. hahaha Had the radiator checked and I think it is stuffed, the bloke wanted $465 for a new core. Thats a bit much isnt it?? Does anyone know what a new core or whole new radiator should cost?

what i have noticed is that the factory thermostats open at around 76 degrees and the ones you buy now open at more like 84. after doing my head the car would sit on half all the tiem.. and creep up quite high on hot days. heres why.. firstly i put in a "new" 84 degree thermostat.. and my fan clutch was never engaging. check your fan clutch. i think the reason the thermostats are now 84 degrees is that it means the temperature is more consistant. my car with a new fan clutch and 76 degree thermostat runs between 1st notch and half.. my brothers car with an 84 is always just above the 2nd notch and hardly moves.

hey natho, I've got a 76 degree thermostat and just got a new fan clutch. Carcrazy - Yes it is a manual. I think I can get mine serviced for free through a mate but if I cant I'm very interested in yours. let you know tomorrow. Is there a difference between turbo and n/a radiators? If so is yours a turbo one?

turbo and n/a radiators are the same. however it appears most turbos came with the 3 core and most n/a's came with the 2 core. if you are getting a new radiator get a 3 core..
