A basic combo to get the car picking up and moving would look something like this:
Pod filter
3 inch exhaust (mandrel bend/stainless steel depending on your budget)
T Piece boost controller set at 10psi
These mod's are budget conscious and will keep you happy for quite a while, but when it come's to fuel economy, the only way is standard.
Also, shop around on the forum's etc as these part's are readily available and can be had for dirt cheap. I've given these item's away for free at one stage to clear my garage, so im sure someone will sell them to you for cheap.
Definately follow the above approach for first mods.
I don't know if you would call these mods good for fuel consumption though.
If that is all you are after and nothing else, get a good tune-up with new plugs etc.
Had an rb30 engined car once, it was the most fuel economic engine I owned.
Because the bloody thing was always at the mechanic I never really had the time to buy fuel and drive the car.
