Hey Guys,
The old VS of mine isn't in need for one but i read on autospeed that ones with a few kays up are just ****house, and infact the whole Genuine Holden item is just ****... just wondering if anyone knew of an aftermarket setup that would be better?
Cheers,
Rob.
Anyone know any model/part numbers for these rollmaster ones? i had heard they were ok from a mate with a Torana...
The reason i'm looking into these is the V6 has a really dodgy timing chain which apparently goes to **** and causes retarded timing, it also has something to do with the knock sensor in them as well but i figure a proper timing chain would get it set and keep it set longer.
I fitted a crow roller timing chain set (including sprockets) to my brothers VN V6 I rebuilt 2000 kms ago.
Don't get the standard chain or any without rollers as they bind up & stretch, that is why the Holden V6 engines have the reputation for being rattly, once we rebuilt the engine it was even quieter than my parents VX which is a fairly quiet engine as well.
When they stretch the valve timing also becomes retarded.
You're on the money, this is where MOST of the Holden V6 rattle problems come from. The chains stretch and cause a rattle.
The other main cause on VN/VP engines was the Harmonic Balancer, these were rubber and steel vulcanised together to make the balancer and they have an issue where the rubber in them perrishes and they go off balance causing them to hit things they're not sposed to hit.
My girlfriends VN has this problem in a bad way.
Haha tell me about it, i replaced mine three weeks ago, it let go @ 5000+rpm while i was doin a burnout hahaha, i thought the crank had broken...
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
The VS v6 Commodores had a problem with flogging out their main crankshaft bearings which was traced out to their harmonic balancer throwing the whole engine out of synch due to improper balance,
Another cause of the rattly noise from the Holden V6 is worn idler shaft bearings, when I did up my brothers V6 motor I replaced both the needle roller bearing located in the back of the block and the ball bearing located up front.
You can buy them from a bearing shop as Holden wanted to sell us the whole balance shaft including bearing for around $300 and not the bearing which presses onto the front.
