My auntie used to own an AU Falcon with the 4 litre motor,3.45:1 diff ratio and "both" our V6 Commodores had "stacks" more with the "higher" 3.08:1 diff ratio.
She grew the wisdom to drive it into the ground after it was 3 years old (she bought it second hand) as the disc rotors were screwed at 60,000 kms and the tyres were worn, she traded it in for a series II VX Commodore which is a far ,far better car.
When we drove the AU we were giving it a caining and its ride was like a rodeo bull kicking & bucking, the suspension was that soft,we tested in a space of 400 metres after it was serviced and my brothers 500,000 km old VN with a slightly worn motor and auto transmission was still quicker in that space.
The first time I went into our VX it was 40,000 kms old,it has a firm ride but comfortable and its IRS works lovely,it doesn't kick & buck and the engine is a smoother engine than the overrated Fraud motor,it also revs out cleaner & performs better.
The V6 Commodores have higher gearing but is still a more grunty and more economical car.
As for getting the VK to keep up to a VN,it will beat one if you actually fit a V6 engine into it,in my view & my experience I have found the Japanese engines such as the RB30 to be Just as strong as the Holden V6 internally, the RB30 has bloody beefy conrods in them which can handle 500 BHP.
I like mainly the American & Japanese motors,of course Holden built a good 5 litre, and are bringing some new motors out soon, just have to wait & see before I comment on the new Holden V6 & V8,but General Motors have some smart people in their department so I think they will make some good engines.
I will probably get "Flammed" for this but I think the Ford product is far better than the Holden product for the AU - BA range verses the VT - VY range.
Ok so the AU has some problems with heads and gaskets and the disc rotors don't really last too long, but overlook those problems and you will see a Ford has the more powerful engine for it's class and has better towing capacity's.
Your Aunties AU would not have had the IRS in it it was a option for the series 1 and 2 the series 3 got it standard .
That would have been the reason for the rough ride, You can bag Ford's all you like but just wait when the "New BA Turbo" runs out of factory warranty then you will see people start to modify them into really quick cars in my opinion they will be the next VL turbo.
The V6 Holden (Buick) engine is a piece of crap, Holden still can't stop the oil leaks even in the brand new cars. The V6 also goes through harmonic balancers they suffer from vibrations and it gets that dreaded death rattle from the timing chain and tensioner at a certain mileage.
Holden should have kept the RB 30 series motor going through the range, because after the VL they went backwards back to old fashioned "Push Rods" in the V6, the only reason they went the V6 is because GM designed the engine and not the Japanese, they needed to keep a GM built car all GM.
Please don't even get me started on the new Generation3 Chevrolet engine.
Has your VX gone through a set of rear tyres yet?, most likely it will need some soon the Holden IRS chews the tyres out really bad, apparently they can't really be aligned I don't know if that is true or not, but I have seen a few VT-X Commodores need replacement tyres fitted because of the rear end.
I like all cars, and not just focused on Holdens only.
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
Holden haven't spent much money on their V6 over the years. I think that's part of the reason why the V6 is so well known for it's poor qualities.
Ford have taken a big leap with their latest 6cyl (and V8), by converting to the modern dual overhead cam setup. While this engine isn't as economical as Ford's previous 6, it certainly has more power (182kw's) and torque.
Holden are also brining out an overhead cam setup with their next V6, which will be in the VY II (out later this year). Some people say Holden will always be playing catch up to Ford's 6cyl DOHC - but the way i see it, Holden can use Ford's 6cyl DOHC as a test dummy before they release their own version of the DOHC V6 engine.
I also agree with Red RB30 JET. And i think the reason why Ford's 6cyl engines have been so much better over the years is because since the 351 was banned, Ford invested much more money into their 6cylinders, how ever that left Ford's V8 engines a little behind - that was until the BA XR8 Boss engine was released.
Ford V8 motors are very over rated in my view, I agree the that Holden have not spent much money on their V6 for long time thus leaving it a bit behind at the moment. Ford will alway's be playing catch up with the V8 as holden are well and truely ahead. Ford have made big leap with the BA but Holden is still ahead by few car lengths and alway's will be, sale's figures prove this.
All I have to say is the number of Fords that you see broken down on side of road from overheating etc much outway's the Holdens you see.
Champ, as much as I love the GEN III, the engine still lacks quality. You have no idea how many GEN III's Holden have not only fixed under warranty, but REPLACED.
Few weeks ago there was a segment on Today Tonight, that featured a $100,000 GTS that had done less then 30,000km's. His GEN III was replaced MORE then once, and fixed more then 5 times. He was only one of many people that had the same problem - and you're trying to convince us that the GEN III is so far ahead? It's a $100,000 car and it's in the garage getting fixed, more then it is on the road getting driven. You have no idea how much money Holden spends on fixing and replacing GEN III engines still under warranty. The thing is, Holden aren't big enough to produce their own engine, they have to wait until Chev USA release the technology.
Ford will always be playing catch up? haha! Mate, the BA is the first time for 20 years Ford have actually invested a lot of money into a V8 - look at the outcome. 4valve DOHC 5.4ltr BOSS engine starting at 260KW's.
As for pulling car lengths, ha - the only thing you'll be pulling is your co.ck
Overheating? yeah, back in the day with the 351's. Maybe if Holden produced the same amount of power back in the day, they may have over heated as well.
Oh, one thing i don't understand champ - if Holden V8's are sooo good, why are you getting rid of yours when you only got it a month ago? mate, you don't make sense. why do you bother even speaking?
Thanks for coming. Cheers!
Well, this conversation started out on a good note - mature discussion about it, but some people just cant help but start to steer it in the wrong direction. This thread will remain open for the time being - but with a warning! If anyone starts a Holden VS Ford fight, this thread will be locked, and the initiator warned. Keep it civil, and keep it mature.
Why close the entire topic for everyone, when it's one person that starts these fights? Can't you ban such users like stockvlt - very annoying.
Like i've said once before, i don't judge a car just on it's badge - i just can't stand narrow minded, stubborn people that have this additude that Ford is better then Holden, or vice versa.
At the end of the day it's a car. Everyone has their personal choice, whether we like it or not.
The topic is about Ford 6ers and Holden 6ers.
Mate for a guy who loves Fords so much then you go out and buy a GSR lancer, your comments are so conradictory it's almost laughable.
Yes I'm selling my car but only to get another Holden, it's not that Im getting rid of it cos i hate holdens it's because I miss the joy's of boost under my foot, not that you would know wht it feels like cos you car runs 9psi or something tiny like that and your to scared to turn it up.
351's didn't produce *** all power unless they were like the GT version or something and it's not just Ford V8's I'm talking about here sixes as well more than 8's alway's sitting on the side of the road.
Mate at least I buy what I stand up to which can't be said for you, you should be talking about Mitsubishi if anything.
how many nice Fords do you see around at the drags or Chapel and stuff, if 1 in 20 and thats on a good night, doesn't that tell you something.
HAHA
HAHAHA So you wanna get personal?
Yeah, i always have liked Fords since i grew up around them all the time. But who says i can't admire both Ford and Holden?
You're selling your VS V8 to buy a VL. Yeah, VL's are nice but just don't forget they're Nissan powered - who's so conradictory now? ha
"Mate at least I buy what I stand up to which can't be said for you, you should be talking about Mitsubishi if anything."
- i was just replying to your incorrect comments about Holden and Ford.
"how many nice Fords do you see around at the drags or Chapel and stuff, if 1 in 20 and thats on a good night, doesn't that tell you something"
- cheap, simple and easy. all the nice Fords are in shows - like the one you went to the other week... I didn't see many holdens there, but i'm not narrow minded like you, so i'm not going to say 'Ford are better'. ha
"not that you would know wht it feels like cos you car runs 9psi or something tiny like that and your to scared to turn it up."
- HAHA scared? mate, i got into my GSR on the FIRST night more then you ever did in your old VL.
tell me something champ, why do you want a turbo again when you NEVER FU.CKING BOOST ANYWHERE ANYWAY?
S O F T C O C K
You may have been boosting hard first night but when you boosted you went crash, boom into the side of someone.
What about all those times i took you out in the BT1 racing people, no boost then ha, think about it?
And your comment about Nissan's in Holdens isn't going to go down to well here.
that's my point - when i was in your BT1 i didn't see, hear or feel any boost. all i could hear was that ugly exhaust sound of yours.
crash, boom? first you get personal, now you start talking sh.it
the RB30ET is nissan built & engineered - were you trying to keep it a secret?
at the end of the day, VL turbos are the fastest cars on the street.
