I came up with an idea when I used to have the ignition timing severely retared. I was going to hook up another boost controlled actuator that would manually pull the dizzy back (retard timing) as the engine came onto boost, with a bit of creative welding of nuts and bolts you could set the max/min levels of ignition timing and these could be flicked between as car came onto boost. end result would be a responsive car that could run safer retarded timing under higher levels of boost it's the opposite of the old vacuum advance dizzy, the "boost retard" dizzy it is a bit of a retarded idea (pun intended) that i know can be achieved with aftermarket ECUs or chips but for the financially challenged this may suffice would it work??

Sounds like a good idea, but could be a bit difficult to set up

yeah.. I guess it would be a bit of a challenge to set up... How would u do it luke ? Im guessing you would have to use some kind of rod attached to the actuator that could be attached to the distributor somehow, and be mounted on a permanent bracket to allow proper sliding of the distributor?

hahaha keep it a secret luke , then once we (coz u know u need my help) perfect it we can make a mint outta it. i got the part in question for ya too

Yeah it could be done........ but the problem with a boost referenced retard set ups, like the MSD boost retard box or the proposed mehanicallt retarded dizzy is that the timing curve should reach lowest timing figure at peak torque and peak boost (eg. 8 degrees at say 4000rpm) then as the revs climb, the timing should climb back up (eg. 22 degrees at 6500rpm) and with this (boost reference only) the timing would stay at the same figure all the way to rev limit as the boost is still the same. on an engine with say 500HP, you can kiss goodbye to maybe 40-50HP at the top end of the rev range. I think it would be best to get a chip written to the timing specs you want, this timing map would be similar on 280HP - 450HP RB30ET's but would be diffent overall based on fuel type used.

thanks HSVSUX i thought there might be more to it what about even just having advancd timing and getting it pulled back to std on boost? you could always use a weak actuator that would spike and taper off in high rpm to give some timing back, keep in mind that it wouldnt necessarily have to make major timing changes andy its not a secret cos i dont intend to do it anymore
