This seems to be the favourite engine when it comes to performance increases ,but I believe some of the conversions are ridiculous.
In the Zoom magazine they tried to paint a glossy picture by fitting a Nissan Rb20DET running the GTR throttle body setup (six butterflies apparently) in a VR Commodore wagon.
It seems ridiculous to me to tear out an understressed Buick v6 which is renowned for its grunty bottom end torque and fit a highly strung Rb20 into such a big car,you think about it,a lot of people (even me) would not contemplate fitting this engine into a lighter VL body, despite changing the diff ratio, then these idiots go and fit the engine into a VR Commodore station wagon of all things.
The potential for the Buick v6 is totally ignored as in America, these engines run 9 - 11 second quarters with simillar gearing as it would take to move the RB20DET powered car at 13 seconds at,the Buick Regals also do wheelstands with the 4.3:1 diff ratio.

soooooo, your question is?
who cares mate... hes trying to do something different so good on him. sure, he could have stuck a blower on the side of the v6 and got some really quick times like you state but maybe hes not after that. maybe he is looking for something different, something original. I personally wouldnt do the conversion in a large car like that but you dont know the past nature of the car also... he could have done it as an option after he thrashed the v6 or it might have had to gone in for a complete rebuild. you just dont know the facts in depth enough. therefore the rb20det might have been a cheaper option.

bbaahhahahahahahahahahahaha, your not serious are you. Not another America is god believer so lets knock something we don't under stand, aka jap crap!! Dude japs have RB20 into the low 9s. Whats ya point, bet (If I was actually bothered) I could get a rb20 to go faster than a V6 for cheaper. Don't under estimate a turbo jap engine. Personally in my view the holden V6 is not a such a good engine and the motor. Even in supercharged form (bolt on vortech) they have dificutlies trying to keep up to a mildly modified VLT or 32 gts-t. To put it in prospective to get a R32 into the low 13 second bracket you need to spend about 5-7 grand of the car (cooler, exhaust, slightly larger turbo, more boost and cutting a few computer wires). As for the V6 well I know a guy who has spent over 10 grand on a vr v6 and he's only cracking mid 13s. Pretty sad really.

1) Using the V6 Buick as an example of American know-how is pretty dumb.
2) "Not another America is god believer" Another "Japan is god" believer?
3) "Personally in my view the holden V6 is not a such a good engine and the motor" In no-ones opinion is it a good motor. It is harsh and prone to failure after 200-250,000kms. Yes it is grunty down low, tho.
4) I'm pretty sure the american V6 is different to ours cos they screw insane amounts of power out of theirs.
Look, Japan make some nice cars but most of their technology is nothing other countries don't have.

the genuine buick v6 is alot different to the ones in commys over here.. if you want big hp outta a v6, you better buy the buick block.... :P

What a mornonic debate.
Japs have RB20's in the low 9's?
What does it matter, we're not talking about a plundered skyline here.
It's a heavy commodore wagon. I'd say he was horrified because the RB20 won't have enuff torque to get the VR going anywhere near as fast as a skyline.
And stoney is right, we dont get the american buick v6's you hear about.
I say good on the guy, and im sure he is aware he wont be going anywhere fast soon.

Are you guys serious??????
The VR weighs 1398 standard......The R32 GTS-T weighs 1320 standard.
VR minus V6 and Auto, then add RB20DET and 5 Speed = Less weight than a standard VR and Lo and behold much less weight than a standard R32.
With the amount of money that this guys sounds like he has spent on this car (RB26 intake manifold) I am sure it is not under-torqued, as you guys know with turbos torque comes exponentially with increased boost and fuel, I bet it will blow 95% of the VLTs on this site.

don't believ me about 9 second 32s? I can't remember which hpi vid but there s red one of there. In fact i'm not having this conversation, you guys will never learn. If I owned a vr and had money to blow, i'd ditch the v6 and go get a good old fuel injected 304 .....

I know it's not twin cam and all, but with much bigger ports, and the fact that you're going turbo anyway, why not the rb30??? **** all over the v6 in bottom end grunt, much stronger, much smoother, and if you're going with the GTR throttle bodies, why not just the whole head, then you've got the twin cams that the rb20 has, plus a ****load more (apart from the obvious expense)
Go on, slag me off, i don't care. But at the end of the day, most of us don't have the money, and you're all just whinging because someone has put a two litre (oh don't worry about the fact it's a more advanced engine) into a car that traditionally has big sixes or v8's. Think about the fact that it will have less weight over the front end, hence less of the ****ty handling that a commodore wagon will inevitably have because of a better weight distribution. Anyway, we're all entitled to our opinions, and i'll wait in earnest to read the abuse that i'm expecting

14-02-03, 16:44 GMT+10#12 yucky holden V6, ever seen one without all the covers and manifolds on it? .
get it on an engine stand turn it upside down and you'll see four journals and a crank that likes to twist itself in half.
ACL sell billet cranks for V6 supercharged, cos thats what your gonna want if u up the boost at all!
have a look at the head and realise that the ports are different lengths into the combustion chambers, each bank has one port that flows well, and two that are right next to each other and flow crap cos they're shorter.
Oh yeah they've all got roller cams standard and they r still crap!

the ONLY reason you couldn't "legally" do this, is because the engine would be older than the VR it was going into. but yer, if you aren't concerned about legality (which personally, im not), then yeh it would a neat conversion
didnt someone do it to a VN already?

you cant expect everyone to believe that the 2.0's are hitting 9's, you seemed shocked that someone could even question it.

15-02-03, 23:17 GMT+10#16 Hit me up with a website or an article and i'll believe.
that is unless this 2L is in a mini or sumting. it would have to have Hmmm at least 800hp to crank out a 9

16-02-03, 01:37 GMT+10#17 What nobody seems to realise, is that with enough money (which these guys in japan obviously have) all you need to do is rebuild engine so it's strong enough, and put one or two ridiculous sized turbos on, with the intercooler to match it. It's that simple, that's why so many tools with stacks of cash these days go for turbo cars. The sky is the limit, particularly with any of the nissan or toyota engines. Just for the record, i've seen a video, and a seperate magazine article on a Suzuki Cultus (Yes a 1.3 litre!) with twin turbs and nos crank out over 700 HP. But oh yeah that's right small engines are ****, aren't they.... Oh and don't forget the fact that horsepower means nothing compared to the importance of torque. I'd rather have 100Nm extra torque than 100HP extra power, in any car, for any driving situation. Also did anyone consider that such cars as this, and 9 second skylines have probably had at least 100 kilo's stripped out. The japs go all out for racing, and they also know a lot about things like how to get more torque from small engines, and changing driveline components to make their cars so fast

16-02-03, 13:27 GMT+10#19 dude like i said watch the hpi vids. theres a red one on there, done by some tuning company on japans south island. I watched the vid again and its 2 litre stroked to 2.4 litres with t51R. Why are you guys too stuborn to realise anything is possible with the right amount of money and some know how? I can't find anything on the net but I will keep searching. Only problem is unless you can read kanji you won't have a clue anyway what its saying, so its pretty pointless. nce I find the name of the tuning company I should find it.
