Hey all!
I recently accquired a fully stock 1993 Lancer GSR and was wondering if anyone has any ideas for basic performance mods that i can do to it without pushing it too far so that things break etc etc....i hear that i can wind the Boost to about 12 psi but not too much further...is there anything else along these lines that i can do??? Any ideas would be welcomed
cheers!

I'll ask a few mates of mine that have them and get back to you. What is your budget by the way? What are you after, power or handling or both?

thanks guys...
in time i wanna be able to get a 3" mandrel exhaust and a nice front mount cooler and drop her on her guts, cold air etc...but for now, until i can get my hands on some decent amounts of money i reckon i'll have to take it easy. just a couple of things that are rather inexpensive. u know how it goes :P I like that idea of the boost controller switch though hey...might have to do that.
Oh and don't worry n/a88VLsl, you'll be happy to know that the Monsto Ralli///Art sticker is on order...should be on next week :P but for the moment...i just have my Tempe Tyres one on there :P hehehe
DVS 86...ummm..really dont know what my budget is at the moment...yet to be determined...but if you know of what sorta prices or ball park figures i might be looking at for a few things that would be a good guide? I'd like to make it a rocket...but at the same time keep it handling nicely.
thanks again!

The 4G93 and 4G63 engines can handle 24psi full time without doing any internal engine modifications.
The first modification you need is an exhaust. Nice 3" if you can afford it - You wont notice much of a power gain with the exhaust, how ever it does help the car quite a lot. Especially if you go upping the boost. When you get the exhaust, i suggest you get a nice custom down pipe from your turbo as well. My friend used to own a GSR, it was basically stock except he had the boost on 22psi full time and a nice exhaust with a crazy custom down pipe. He used to blitz everyone - but partly because no one else had the balls to launch at 7 grand.
One thing you have to watch out with the GSR is their lifters. You may notice when you start her up in the morning you can hear a loud, "tick tick tick tick". This is a common problem with the 4G93 and 4G63 engines. These noises should go away after the car warms up - if you still hear it ticking after you've been driving it, you may want to replace the lifters. (about $900 inc labour) or try this stuff called, "Nulon - Performance Engine Treatment". Chuck some of that in with your oil. You'd be suprised, but it does work.
Don't think about lowering it too much with a 3" exhaust. If you get a 3" exhaust it has to go under your rear axle. I've seen some GSR's with exhausts that go over the rear axle, but i'm pretty sure it wasn't a 3".
Also, mke sure you have a nice set of front tyres - GSR's tend to understeer a little, so extra grip at the front would be good.
Oh, i'd also keep your stocky GSR wheels on it.
Good luck!

24psi?? that's monstrous! :P haha
hey your right about that tick tick tick noise hey...it does that...and as you said goes away once she warms up. I'll look at gettin some of that stuff for the moment hey.
the stockos are stayin for ages hey...i reckon they look choice! mate of mine has his GSR lowered etc with the stockers on it and it's still looks good
take it easy!
cheers

13-02-03, 06:45 GMT+10#10 Hmmm 24psi, ok then
Btw gsr 1.8L have a nasty habit of blowing holes in the side of the block at high boost.. so i'm guessing that would happen at 24psi

14-02-03, 09:01 GMT+10#11 i havn't heard that before.
My friend used to own a GSR. Basically stock, cept had nice exhaust and a mad custom down pipe - oh, and he used to run 22psi.
He slaughtered so many people out there. In the end he went through about 7 gear boxes, but the engine was still going.
I don't think any Lancer has received the treatment this one did, he used to launch it on red line (7,500rpm) and just dump the clutch, yet she was still goin - no holes in the block!

14-02-03, 10:23 GMT+10#12 Basic stock and used to run 22psi ?
Basically stock would mean standard injectors, this runnnig 22psi on standard injectors and standard turbo ?

14-02-03, 12:40 GMT+10#13 im affraid i have to agree with midz on this 1. 22 pounds and on standard injecters and computer....riiiiiiiiittttttteeeeeeeee(qouted from dr evil) i have to say that is highly unlikely cuz the computer shuts down under a tremendous amount of boost that ur mate was producing, and by throwing on a "choice exhaust" with a "choice dump pipe" isnt gna let ur engine handle 22 or 24 psi. i think ur mate should have invested in a boost gauge to c the difference between 14 and 24. also this 7500 dumps all day and everyday on 24psi id say ur mate would have done more that 7 gearboxs maybe say a few round objects we like to call pistons and other things such as bearings.... not taking the piss out of ya but ur mates a sandwhich short of a picnic basket and he should pull the other 1

17-02-03, 08:28 GMT+10#14 put it this way - he never put a computer in it, nor did he ever do any internal engine modifications. The person he bought it off didn't mention anything along these lines either.
He had a 20psi gauge, it used to boost off the clock.
after his TD04 blew, he chucked in the TD05.
if you're in melbourne you'd still see it around - it's lime green now.
