headers are otherwise called extractors. They are basically an exhaust manifold which flows better than standard and is usually considerably lighter. On a VL the headers should be made to bolt directly up to your catalytic convertor, completing the first part of an exhaust up grade. From there you can get a cat back system, 2.5 inch seems popular and a good muffler to suit, but dont get 2 mufflers. There may be some brands of headers that bolt to the flange joint near the O2 sensor for easier installation.

why shouldnt we gets two mufflers? does that impede the flow of gasses or does it make it sound less beefy?

just a quick question on this topic. What are good headers aka extractors for a VL?? i am looking at getting some a a new 2.5 exhust also.. When you say dont have 2 mufflers do you mean not have the back one?? right now on my car i dont have the back one.. Also does anyone know any good places to get extractors and exhust done in melb?? been to so many places so many diff prices but they all want too much for them nearly 1k Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

During the exhaust stroke, a good way for an engine to lose power is through back pressure. The exhaust valve opens at the beginning of the exhaust stroke, and then the piston pushes the exhaust gases out of the cylinder. If there is any amount of resistance that the piston has to push against to force the exhaust gases out, power is wasted. Using two exhaust valves rather than one improves the flow by making the hole that the exhaust gases travel through larger. The idea behind an exhaust header/extractors is to eliminate the manifold's back pressure. Instead of a common manifold that all of the cylinders share, each cylinder gets its own exhaust pipe. These pipes come together in a larger pipe called the collector. The individual pipes are cut and bent so that each one is the same length as the others (this is where you hear the trem "tuned length"). By making them the same length, it guarantees that each cylinder's exhaust gases arrive in the collector spaced out equally so there is no back pressure generated by the cylinders sharing the collector. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

The type of manifold you described there is an "equal length" manifold. A "tuned length" manifold uses primary pipes of different (calculated) lengths and is designed so that the gas pulse from one cylinder going past the collector actually helps to "suck" the gas out of another cylinder. 1k is very expensive. I did mine myself and used "Motavator" extractors, bought 2nd hand (but near new) off of this site for $170 + $20 for gaskets...so roughly $190. Exhaust place quoted me $150 to install them, you can pick up new extractors for about $300-400, so all up you should only pay at the most about $600 for extractors......$1k should get you pacemakers + 2.5 inch Lukey system with, Lukey muffler and hi flow cat, fully installed. Lukey and Genie are all owned by the same business in QLD i think so most extractor systems for VL are pretty similar dont get ripped.

Can you still put on Exhaust heat shield over manifold if you put Pacemaker Headers on VL or dont you require the heatshield cover for Exhaust Manifold??? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Wow you guys got ripped off big time. My pacemakers cost me $250 and my 2 1/2 inch system with 3 inch tip was $195 they installed my extractors when they put the exhaust on for free. Well not really for free I had to pay for some new bolts and a gasket. My 2 /12 system included a highflow no-name straight through muffler which does the job quite nice. Ive had that system for over a year now and I havent had any problems with it yet.

Did mine myself and did not break one stud, all this crap about breaking studs is crap. Just use heaps of oil or grease as you are removing the old manifold and use a torque wrench when u put the extractors on.

If your studs are in ok condition just oil them up and dont even buy new ones. Let the exhaust shop know that your not an idiot or u will get hijacked.

what a 2.2 inch exhaust? Sounds like an OK price. Tell them to bash the arse through your cat....they can put it on the bill as "high flow" and invoice u for 30 minutes labour. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
