Im thinkin of doing a homemade cold air intake into my standard VL Berlina Airbox. I have pictures of a few methods but was wondering if anyone out there had a proven method on the best way to conduct this modification. On a budget the cheapest method would be most practical.
Thanks.

I have done this on my vl cheaply and effectively just go to your local wreckers and get varius bits of heater ducting straight and bendy i got about 10 bits and didnt use allof them and it only cost 5 bucks just search through the wrecks and pick out what u want also get some glue and zip ties then take out ur air box and use aholesaw to cut ahole in the bottom the right size for the duct make a hole in the metal under the airbox for the duct and use the various bits to make a duct to the front bar cable tie and glue it in place and bobs your uncle then use either strong plastic or metal to cover the original intake in the airbox. Hope this helps buddy

hehehe zip ties are your friend !!! lol..
you can do this cheaper than what im getting done by going plastic and zipties - im getting an exhaust shop to make a mandrel bent pipe for it, and have it welded in place (45degree 5" mandrel bend with connected pipe going to front bumper - flared at the front). This is costing me $50. bit more $ than plastic irigation pipe and zipties, but alot better quality. And really... $50 aint that much.

Does any one know if these cold air intake mods are legal???

i assume it will differ from state to state.. in qld, a cold air intake is legal as long as you retain the standard airbox with the panel air filter. (im not too sure on the cutting of metal though, although i cant really see it being a problem as its not a structural component your cutting through).

No, the cold air induction should be fine in MOST states, its just the cutting metal bit that worries me

10-02-03, 19:55 GMT+10#12 yeah but if the cops check your car they are going to look at the tyres. then they will see the hole cut into guard into the airbox and the piping. don't know about where you guys are from, but around my area, if im with my friends at night just parked at maccas or whatever, the cops just come park behind you and check your car for defects. so i try to keep my car as defect free as possible.

28-02-03, 22:44 GMT+10#15 I did the same as everyone else but used 90mm plastic downpipe. really good bends and glues together! Painted matt black you can hardly see it!Don't hang down to low or you will get a motor full of water & then you can kiss your motor goodbye!!!!!!!!!!!!

03-03-03, 12:00 GMT+10#16 My last VL had one made out of storm water pipe.
When I crashed it the group A spoiler was ripped off revealing the cold air intake but the cop didn't say a word.

03-03-03, 14:42 GMT+10#17 Just did the mod this morning. got a 45degree 90mm piece of PVC and a straight piece from the hardware store. was less than $10. cut hole through airbox and then through metal. pushed the 45degree piece through from underneath so it just comes through into the airbox then ran a 300mm length of pipe down to near the front bumper and cut the end so it was vertical. Painted it all black and sealed of the old hole in the airbox.
Power difference?
Hardly anything maybe a bit quicker but hard to tell. It should make a difference at higher speeds.
What difference does everyone else who has done this think?

03-03-03, 18:28 GMT+10#19 a jigsaw. it wasnt easy, some of it had to be cut from underneath.

if anyone has a doubt, block up the hole in the front of the airbox and watch everyone kick your ass, i've been there done that, the more air u get thru the biggest hole in front of the filter is the best. The cold air induction effect really shows itself on a hot day.
