I'll be after a new exhaust shortly (VL 3 litre), I already have extractors and 2.5" from cat back with one single baffled muffler, but I am thinking of changing to 2.5" stainless piping mandrel bent with a straight through resonator, and one straight through muffler. My prerequisite with the exhaust is for it to sound really tough and bassy, currently it sounds like every other VL on the road, just a touch of bass, and it makes a horrible gargling noise on a trailing throttle. What sort of combos have other people used to get their VLs actually sounding sweet, and not like a ****ty V6 VN?

Just about all VL's sound the same, its hard to make one sound different! I'd look at getting a high flow catalyctic converter, as well as part of your new exhaust. It'll never sound as good as say a Ford V8, but fitting a Lukey straight through muffler makes it sound a bit beefier. Oh yeah get used to the droney resonance of the 3 litre!

I recon the gurgling sounds cool.

A friend of mine with an R31 Silhouette has same extractors as mine, running cat (I have bypassed mine with straight 2.5" pipe), 2.5" exhaust from cat-back running a resonator and cheap straight through barrel muffler. Sounds a lot different to the general VL with a Lukey exhaust system (which I currently have). I think I'll go down this route Another bonus is that the gargling noise is pretty much gone (I think due to the resonator). Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

That would be correct.

hmm the gargle i had was when there wasn't a cat in there.... blew flames too.. but, since i investigated and there wasn't a cat... i chucked the stock exhaust and stuck a 2 1/2 mandrel on there with a high flow cat/muffler and no resonator, set of extractors and a high flow filter - screamed and sounded beefy... since then... ditched the rb30 in favour of an rb20det..... screams don't bother with stainless - how long are you planning to keep the car - the only thing it will benefit is it won't rust up... if its for show - just get a stainless pipe from the diff back etc.. otherwise - waste of money you can spend elsewhere.. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

what makes the gurgling sound when reving down, because when my car had a slight exhaust leak from the engine pipe it did it, but after i got it fixed it doesn't. is the any way to get the car to do it because i like it.

I was talking to my local exhaust shop cause i'm thinking of getting cats back exhaust as i already have extractors. He reconmended that i leave the rear resonator but use a high flowing mercury one and get rid of the center muffler and use 2 1/2 inch steel. Anyone done this and know if it will sound any good. I don't won't an awful drone by the way.

I hate resonators! In my old n/a VL, I had a set of lukey extractors a cat with a 2.5" pipe welded through the middle of it (effectively no cat), and 2.5" straight though piping with a single lukey straight through muffler. I had comments from everyone about how good it sounded, and if you were to strap one of the gears out (I had a manual) and putting it into neutral or what ever, you'd have an impressive flame and burble. I never had black **** on the back of my car either. That's my opinion, I loved it

Yeah all i can say is.. If you dont have an "AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR" that works.. get a new one. Makes a hell of a lot of difference to how ur car performs on HOT summer days. Ollie

The first thing I did when I got my NA was to get rid of the resinator even before I had enough money to get a 2 1/2 extractors etc.

I think i'll be getting a resonator on my turbo when i get it. the VL drone is f**king annoying! I do a fair few 400km trips and the constant VAAAAAAAAA is really irritating. I'd like a nice note, that isn't drony or too loud (legal reasons)

My exhaust can be droney, but most of the time it's pretty nice escpecially when you flatten it Thats a 2 1/2 with extractors and 1 muffler... it's like a 2 min job to swap to the other muffler, but it's sounds weird with that on :? I do the same trip as hornet (minus -45 mins) and I don't find the noise too annoying, that lockup clutch sorts it out Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
