Simple plan.
I have a basic 450mhz computer setup with a cd-rom, creative live soundcard, and 8gig of harddrive, spare.
Is there an easy way of connecting this to my current car audio setup consisting of a Clarion cd head unit, 2 x Jaycar amps. The black ones (150W x 2) not the old blue ones, 1 x 15" Sony Xplod , 1 x set of old alpine dddrive splits.
My thoughts were to try and connect the soundcard outs to the amp directly, but this doesn't allow easy control of volume.
With it connected directly, would it be more prone to noise?
Also would the 12V-14V from the car be able to run a computer, or will it spike too much and let in noise? Maybe I could run a 12V regulator to clean it up abit?
When you hook it up you don't want any spikes AT ALL... or by by mr. computer
Either use an intverter (ie DC-AC-DC) lol, a bit stupid, but anyway, you could buy an expensive regularor for it instead (a pain to setup though)
hehe - check out mine... (not in the car) http://www.platinum-central.com/photos/?mode=album&album=mp3Server&dispsize=750

I've been working on one of thse for a long time, got a 40x4 charater display to display song titles etc, i've even built my own custom dc-dc converter. my (out of date) site on my setup is http://www.mp3vl.tk
cheers :P
Adrian... got any more info on your DC-DC converter? is it regulated?
Heh I want one!
Yeah i've got the beasty P200MMX, 96mb ram, win98, winamp, a remote networking plugin, cassiopiea e-10 networked to it through a little proxy and it sort of works (lol). Along with a hella expensive soundcard I had laying around!
Havn't worried about any power management, nothing bad should happen Disabled the stupid scandisk when it starts up.
But now what I need is my this networking to work all the time :lol;
oh well, it's probably never going to make it to my car anyway easier to burn it onto a cd

Thanks for the advice guys.
Have you got a wiring diagram for your dc-dc convertor/regulator and if it's not to much to ask for diagrams for the display and the hand control you were designing.

sorry for the sloppy page, but the files i have stored on my computer relating to this can be found here: http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~hornett/

You could get a laptop h/d i guess - but there are some pretty crazy people who have made little holders with rubber and stuff to keep the h/d nice and still...
how does the sproggy power supply work? if i were to have one built, what do i do with it? How do i connect it? does it replace the normal powersupply of a computer? Sorry for being ignorant in the way of electricity...
Thanks.
thanks! im gonna get onto building one...
How does it go as far as reliability? Any explosions as yet? Can i be confident that this will be able to supply power to a computer properly? Can you give me more specific technical details on it?
I been looking for something like thisf or ages! I planned this idea about 6 or so years ago but i dont know about power supplies
Thanks!

Yeh, it would replace your entire power supply. And it just runs of a 12v supply in your car, either your cig lighter, or striaght off the battery.
Also the HDD's nowadays can withstand quite a bit of force. Mount them vertically, and any bumps you hit wont send the head crashing into the disc platter. Also some people have put them in foam to help absorb shocks.
I'm using a 40x4 character LCD Display to control mine. I have found some winamp plug-ins that let me do anything i'd want to, browse albums, (i have all my mp3's sorted into albums) and play random, repeat, etc etc.
I was going to mount mine in the boot, on the right side opposite the spare tyre, but i think i'll give up on that idea, and just make a nice carpeted box and sit it behind the drivers seat, run all cables up under the centre console. If i need to have people in the back, i'll just un plug it and sit it in the boot...simple

I had this crazy idea the other day, it will probably work too haha!
Mount the computer in the boot, complete with bluetooth or 802.11 wireless card, mount ipaq or similar palmsize computer at front, now, you'd actually play your songs through the ipaq (it's pretty good quaility actually!) which means no bootup time if you want to listen to a few of your favourites stored on it's internal memoy, then once the computer boots up, you can access all the songs from it and play them directly!
Not to mention you just grab a wireless card for your home computer, and upload any new songs into your car while it's parked in the shed, all ready for the next time you go for a drive
hehe...

yeah im gonna do my boot up and i want it symmetrical so im gonna have a box over the spare tyre and a box over the right side also (which should fit a computer nicely, hopefully!)...
Im not having windows... i found a real nice DOS proram that even has plugins like winamp... on a 486 it used about 8% of the CPU total and plays really crips!.. i want a flatscreen colour monitor though... im gonna need some type of keyboard/mouse thingie as well i guess...
fun!
You should consider running linux too - a 486 is a bit slow though You must be able to find something a little bit better?

well i have a pentium 3 400MHz i was gonna put in there with a 40gig HDD... i was just saying that this dos program used so little CPU on a 486 as an example of the program... i dont want to have to wait for windows to load and after 6 months of incorrect shutdown procedure have it die on me ... I dont want to have to wait for startup/shutdown everytime....
