could someone tell em how these compare to the carby's, how much power increase there is, fuel consumption and how they compare to the rb30 we all love.
cheers.
I used to have an injected VK Calais, there is a bit of a power increase but nothing to write home about.
Fuel consumption is slightly better than a carby.
In comparison to the RB30, well, theres just no point. Youre comparing what is essentially a 1970s engine with injection fitted as a last resort by Holden to revive the ageing donk, to a beautifully designed Nissan engine. There really is no point trying to compare them. If youve got the money, buy a VL. Simple really!
Just my 2c worth....
dont bother with them, they are more trouble than they are worth. i have only seen a couple running as well as they should be.
much more refinement, smoothness and potential in an RB30.
about the only thing it has over an RB30 is torque - but its not a huge differance.
I ripped out the auto from behind my EFI motor and put in an aussie 4speed (beause I had one in the shed) and the difference was incredible. I prefer driving this over my daughters VL auto. But agree it is still an old motor and if you to seek extra power the rb30 is the way to go.
If your going the RB30E and are wanting the Torque, You Should Just Add a Charger to It. Increasing the Power/Torgue... Nicely.
I'm going to say the Obvious. Ditch the VK and get a Skyline, the car the motor was made for. you get better fuel economy out of a Skyline than a VL.
But if holdens are you taste go VL.

I think that is a silly comment as they both have an RB30,also the VL uses a taller (3.45:1) diff ratio on both the auto & manuals than the Skylines (3.7:1 & 3.9:1) which in theory would suggest the VL would have slightly better fuel economy, the figures for an auto Skyline in the city was about 11 km/100 kms (1 litre less for a manual),in a manual VL you can get about 8.5 l/100 kms mixed city/highway cycle.
They geared the Skylines lower as the VL's came out with the same motor fitted before the Skyline was released and they had to do something to try & lure buyers in when rivaling it against the Holden with the same motor,so they geared it lower to give better takeoff.
Hummm i would have to disagree russel
I currently own 2 Skylines Series II Silhouette and a Series III Silhouette.
the SIII has achieved a 716km Hwy 65lt usually i will make 660 around town.(Extractors 2"sys, cannon muff.)
The SII usually makes 675-680 around town (DEAD Stock).
With a VL that was a (stock) ride i used to get around town about 540
All timings' were std fact spec.
So in the aspect of the spec. you have posted yes that is true. but the fact of the reality is that the VL in my eyes didn't live up to the same expectation. as far as Fuel econ. goes..
and i have you know that the Rb30e was developed before the VL was in production.
but if someone can give some better advice as in a VL achieving 700km / tank i'll happly take my responce back.
but thanks for the spec info russell.

My Vl only gives about 400 km a tank average driving but nearly doubles on the open road. Wish I could get that 8.5 l/100km average. If I had the money I'd get the Skyline, better base car. But to compare My VL to my VK The Vk is easier to drive around town and to get going as the torque is available at lower revs. But I do prefer the power steer of the VL.
Clint - I have owned a EFI VK Calais, a n/a VL and now have a VLT. Take it from me, the VK was a pig of a car to drive and the amount of fuel it went through, even when it was in tune, had OPEC sending me Christmas cards every year for the sheer volume I went through. All things being equal (state of tune etc) The VL is a much smoother engine to drive, more responsive and a lot easier on the petrol.
My VK used to get around 270km to the tank, around town driving sensibly. I think the tank was around 60something litres - someone can confirm the amount.
My VL's sweep past 400km to the tank around town when I take it easy, my VLT usually gets more than 400 (just) when I floor it everywhere.
Hope this helps. 8)
I have acheived a best of 7.6 L per 100 km....but a friend of mine had a Skyline and he always raved about the fuel economy of it...BTW didn't Nissan claim 118 Kw for the RB30 in a Skyline? As opposed to 114 kw in a VL?
Driving moderately with my 4sp manual (M20), I'm able to get 380-400kms out of 55l in my *Warmer* vk efi 6 (in a VH commodore.) I think if everything is going fine in a stock vk, with exhaust and intake mods (as you guys comparing economy have), you'd do 450-500km/55l in the vk efi.

Dave
