Threads regarding tinting tail lights are fairly common, so I thought i'd share with you another way of achieving the dark lights look, with out using nightshades, and keeping your car legal.
This is how i went about getting dark tail lights on my VL exec.
(1) Remove tail lights and middle piece from car.
(2) Mask up, and paint the grey surounds of the lights black, aswell as the middle piece
(3) Buy 2x10m rolls of 3mm black pinstriping from a auto accessory shop (ie Autobarn)
(4) Put a pin stripe on each rib of the tail light, the 3mm pin striping is almost exactally the same length.
(5) Put back together and admire.
Here are the pics:
I was pulled over on the weekend, and the cop mad me put my foot on my brakes because he thought my lights were too dark. Because the lens arn't tinted, the light is just as bright. When he saw how bright they still were, he didn't say a word about them. This is very similar to how the SS tail lights left the factory, only they are painted ribs and not pin stripped.
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

or you can just buy a set of VK tail lights which r exactly what u hav done, black instead of grey, with the black pin stripes........or the VL one r also the same except u hav to paint the grey black, but the pin stripes r already there

Great idea! I like the innovation.....
Hmmm might go well with a calais too, but put it on the non-ribbed for that dark effect, though the light may be a problem as it might be too dark.
VK and VL Calais lights are already tinted from factory (well, the plastic has a smoke effect in it).

hrrmmm easy cheaper way instead of pinstrip is to use a Artline chisel point texta, works a treat and doesn't wear off although u hav re-do it every year or so...but only if u are fussy..i'd post a pic if i could!!!

Now hang on a god damn minute.
This is not a new innovation.
I did the pin stripe on the tail lights when I first got my VL in 98!
And I'm sure I wasn't the first to think about it.
Also I have mentioned it time and time again as a way of darkening your tail lights without actually tinting them.
It is time consuming but the final result is worth it.
dont take credit pal...
man this has really got my blood up.

29-01-03, 19:47 GMT+10#11 I tinted mine with that nightshades, they came up fine, and you can still see the reflectors fine so cops can't do you for them. I think I was one of the only cars that didn't get a canary at the last Melbourne cruise.
