Just got hold of supercharger from toyota 1ggze motor. Basically ive fabricated the bracket and tensioner for it to sit beside the RB30. Just wondering if anybody knows the maximum psi that a naturally aspirated RB30 can handle with out modifying the ECU. Im using the original ECU therefore dont want any piggy pack chips or change of ECU. This project is not for speed or race thats for sure, but taking advantage of my parts bin. Does any one know if anybody else has peformed this excersise before. Any techinical information is well appreciated..
Most factory NA engines are quite happy running upto 6psi boost. This is shown in the many kits available, from hyundai's to hsv's. BUT one factor that remains constent in these kits is the need to adjust the factory ECU, as most of the kits also come with a retuned chip (some bolt on supercharger kits can even gain 50% - 100% more power and run some 10-12psi with an intercooler or water injection )
You could give CAPA a call in South Australia as they sell a range of bolt on kits and may sell you just the chip (If the vl ECU is even chipable?). Or head to a chiptorque outlet and they'll adjust your ECU.(@ $500)
If you want to be dodgy Joe, bolt it up, check the air/fuel mixtures when on boost, and if you need more fuel, increase your fuel pressure untill the mixtures are safe. Although this will work at fixing your mixtures somewhat, it'll increase fuel throughout the fuel map, making the engine run much richer, which may result in a loss of power :!:
As the saying goes - "You get what you pay for"

Actualy, just a note .. been in email contact with rodshop.com.au .. apparntly by the end of Feb they should have an RB30 supercharger kit released. Its apparntly on display in theyr actual shop. details theyv told me so far are basically that it runs 3.5psi, and provides a 30% power increase, with a decompression plate. Expected cost they say will be between $1800 and $2000 .. but this might change .. i BELIEVE it will work on the standard ECU without modification .. Could be something to look at if your contemplating the S/C route ..
Oh thanks guys for all the info, its made me think alot more with regards on how to overcome more boost(ie more then what it expects) on RB30 NA, i guess what ill try do now is run air/fuel ratio meter on my dash, ill design a circuit( i might have one already from uni) that will run an additional injector to add more fuel if leaning. The ciruit will interface the Air/Fuel meter, boost gauge and tacho.
Hopefully the Air/Fuel meter is very close to real time, though ive been advised that it will cost money for something that good. I guess what i can also design or incorporate in the circuit is a datalogger(same circuit as above) basically what it will do is snapshot in realtime all the data prior to the extra injector running. It will measure the amount of boost and AF mixture at any given rpm , so therefore ultimately giving me a graph of the nature of my engine when supercharger is in place. Hence giving me the vital statics of when the A/F mixture is starting to lean at a certain rpm. This info above will be used in an algorithm(nature of how the circuit will operate given any condition) incoporated in the circuit above.
Example.
The intial data taken from the datalogger is the following:
The engine at 4500rpm, has A/F ratio on leaning side, at a PSI of 4.
Therefore i should program the eprom on my circuit to add a certain amount of fuel via extra injector, given the conditions of above. I guess that it is also important to apply all possible load conditions on the engine so that circuit is well diverse. The circuit in proposal will always be working in real time aswell constantly listening to the A/F meter, tacho and most important of all, controlling the extra injector to either decrease fuel as its getting rich, or increase fuel as its leaning.
Now my main problems are:
1. Girls dont like my VL(they want an import)
2. Do i make sense? i hope so
2.If more boost then what is 'expected' is received on NA engine, how will the engine react? will it lean out, or will it go rich(i have problem because i dont know how to control the current injectors and/or fuel pressure regulator)?
3.Next problem is im not really cluey on EFI managment as you can tell, im from the old skool and i only know carbies( well i hope so). Is there any books for dummies such as myself that will explain to me basics of EFI, and explain concepts and theory in detail.
Before i end it here for tonight, id just like to explain why im doing this project. Im taking on this project as a matter of rejogging my brain and to practice a form of engineering. All of the parts i have readily available except an Air/Fuel meter, thefore making my current proposal for my project pretty affordable. The cicuit ive been mentioning is board that i used to use in uni that can control any device given the correct interface, this board only cost me $100, its main processor is motorolla 68HC11. I can also opt for a modified chip or ecu, though i guess i might aswell buy a car that has a turbo. Its really good to see your responses to my messages, good to see people are interested or can shed light in this venture of mine.
Ok my mate got this for me from the hot rod show that was on the weekend....
Supercharge your 3 litre engine...
The following information is designed to answer some of the questions that could arise if you are considering supercharging a 3 litre nissian 6 cylinder engine.
* The CRS kit is a totally bolt on deal and will totally clear everything in a VL Commodore.
* The kit will not fit with the power streering and air conditioning in the factory location.
* The blower wil boost around 10 psi.
* A decompression plate is supplied to maximise performance.
* The use of premium fuel with the fitting of water injection would be reguired if a decompression plate was not fitted.
* The blower is driven by a suppled "A" section belt from the standard crank pulley.
* A blower pressure gauge is supplied.
* The throttle body is removed and a crossover pipe is fitted between the blower and the stock manifold.
* No blow-off valve is supplied or found to be necessary.
* All mounting brackets are suppled and a belt tensioner is built into the one of the mounting brackets.
* A supplied manifold bolts to the blower and allows the stock throttle body to be bolted directly onto it along with the stock air flow meter as well as supplied cable bracket and a supplied air cleaner.
* The blowers are full checked and guaranteed.
* Fitting instructions are supplied.
We have been testing the kit on a VL nissan and everything has proven 100% reliable and dyno runs have performed with the enclosed results. On a totally stock motor with only the decompression plate fitted an 80km reading went to 110kw with no computer modifications. No other modifications have beeen tested. As previously stated the kits come 100% complete and will cost approximately $1800.00. For people who have their own blower unit it could be mailed to us for the appropriate modifications and will redue the tota cost by around $300.00. Freight costs must be paid at time of despatch. All kits are packed well and the average freight costs are: Victoria $35.00, S.A and N.S.W $55.00, W.A and N.T $75.00, Old $65.00.
Its from the Castlemaine Rod shop......
Hope that helps you out abit....
Oh yeah ive visted capa sight once and i did see that there website s/c kit. price was around the 5k-6k range not exactly what i want to spend, but that crs kit does look good i wouldnt mind that. If power output is 110kw on the wheels then on the engine must be like 140kw, not bad for $1800. I guess its worth looking at. 8)
VL4LIFE I assume your supercharger that you got of the Toyota engine is a SC14?
http://www.geocities.com/iancperry/Datsun1200Page5.html
I originally got an SC14 for my VK, made up a semi reasonable bracket but then the VK got written off...dammit!
Where did you end up mounting it? (I pick up my new VL calais on Monday night so I havent had a good look in the engine bay to work out where I'm gunna mount it) How are you going to set up the electronic clutch on the SC14? (I was just going to set it to be always "on") I'd be very interested to know how you ended up mounting it.
I did a fair bit of reading on what some people are doing to the SC14, putting on diesel engines and stuff. As a matter of fact the pics I've seen of Castle Maine Rod shop supercharger kit for the good 'ol 202 looks like a SC14/12 is part of the kit. Methinks maybe the Rod Shops RB30 kit has a SC14/12???
They might not sure but they do alot of good things i hear..
at the hot rod show last weekend attack was their 3000kw's at the wheels heheh lookjs pretty cool but yeah the rod shop was their and they had an RB30 motor their with the supercharger on it... my mate said it was pretty cool and picked up what i posted before if i had 1800 bucks i would buy it and get some pro to fit it and that would cost more but they know what they are doing...
i like superchargers more sounds alot better and always on and dont need to wait for the boosting
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
how do u guys reckon a stocker vl auto would hold up to the extra power.. the box is in good condition(tho it doesnt sound like it coz of the unis *clunk*) and the diff is also in good condition.
im seriously considering getting one, only $1800, altho thats what i paid for my car :P (cheap for a vl with minimal rust (bit around the windscreen and boot, tho im guessing alot underneath) and new interior, new tyres, perfect engine and 200thou on the clock)
kaBOOM,
Ive mounted mine where airconditioner would fit, my car is an SL commodore, so it had no power steering or aircon which made the fit easy, im not going to continue with using the original computer nor with the circuit ive started to design, i just dont have the patients so what im gonna do is the following:
1.Change it to straight gas, setup will be blow through using gas research carby.
This will allow an intercooler setup, cant do it with suck through very dangerous.
Gas has higher octane so its good for boost.
2. Possibly use and recoed dizzy from a 280z? or 280zx to take care of igniton, basically im gonna keep it simple now.
I was thinking about getting the kit from CRS for $1800 but with that i can get a gas setup and just add an extra $500 for a second hand intercooler.
simple break down:
Gas setup:$1800
Intercooler:$500
total: $2300 or slightly more
Ive seen some guy in zoom do this on RB30 but he was using an yella terra supercharger with out an intercooler as he was running suck through. Ive always been interested in gas, seems like a very simple system, some people say that it looses power, though ive been advised by many installers in melbourne that if the proper cam is used then power can be maintained if not gain.
ps ill try to get hold of digi cam so i can post it up..
looks pretty good..
Oh yeah forgot to tell ya guys, i had a VL turbo(my fave car very very fast hehe) aswell, i was going to try the superchager on that, but its got aircon and power steering and its an ass to remove it just for the experiment. I wish i did keep it. ohwells..
VL4LIFE, Would love to see those pics when you get em
Just a thought for ignition .. you might wanna look into the Jaycar/AutoSpeed kits for programable ignition .. might be better than a dizzy given the spec your running at.. could tweak it up quite nicely ..
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
if you got the money, anything is possible...
and yes. the turbo pumps its compressed air into the supercharger and then the supercharger compresses this air even more whilst pushing it into the throttlebody.
i think thats the basic setup of it. i got a picture but as usual, nowhere to store it on the web.
i met a guy at the last cruise that was supposed to be getting one of those toyoya blowers put on his n/a - should be done by now if what he said was right. hes blackvlgrpa on the adelaide forums i think. anyone know how he went?
