About the only good thing about cars as old as HQ's is the fact they are pre ADR meaning they had no pollution gear so it's less hassles if the EPA nab you, where if you say put a holley carb on your 5.0 V8 VK then you will hassled as the VK is an ADR car you can't modify them and keep them as legal as the old HQ.
But if it were me I'd go with a VK because they are a smaller car and you can have more fun with them, as well as parts are plentiful and they are cheap to fix.

VK Calais deifnately, as long as its an 8. Dont bother with a 6pot VK, you'll hate teh thing trust me.
What state do you live in, just so we can tell if you will get bothered by the EPA or not.

And parts for a HQ hard to find? they were the most produced Australian car right up until the VX. And even then, the parts off HQ, HJ, HX, HZ some WB and even the HK/T/R cars share some parts.
That's a big-ass selection of parts to choose from, plus you can get em for next to nothing.
Plus HQs look mega cool, specially a Premier, and VKs are boxy ulgy pieces of crap (visually) strangled by emmisions gear.
Course I'm biased because I hate the look of VKs... though a mate of mine had some fun ones that he thrashed the **** of and none of them died. Course most HQs are tough as nails as well... dont expect much efficiency out of a 253 but
Yes you can sure get plenty of rusted out and bogged up panels for old Holdens such as HQ's at swap meets and wreckers, me I'd prefer to get newer panels and parts with less damage.
Let the truth be know these day's the old HQ ain't too common now in the scrap yards as the demand for the parts, panels for the HQ sports sedan race cars have just about dryed all the good stock up.
Any way the only H series Holdens worth restoring and spending money on are the coupes and Monaro's maybe a ute, the rest you would be wasteing your time and money on.

well with either car i was planning on going a C.O.M.E Racing 355 stroker, and later MAAAYBE (depends how big the hole in my wallet is) a Powerdyner supercharger.
this car is purely a project car, take it out on my birthday if im lucky
this is what i would like the HQ look like if i got one

18-04-03, 18:05 GMT+10#10 I've had both a HQ and a VK and while I have fond memories of the HQ (first car, V8 Monaro) I wouldn't go past a VK especially a Calais. They handle better, ride better, better NVH and creature comforts like aircon/ventilation system work better. I got into a HQ a month or two back just after getting out of my VK and while it might have been nostalgic, I couldn't see myself back in one.
