hmmm i have just started to notice my engine makes a ticking noise but i only notice it when my car is ideling at the lights (prolly cause u cant hear anything over the exhaust normally) i was wondering what might be the problem? as far as i can tell from listening to other vl's this noise is wrong and others dont do it.

Sounds to me like noisy lifters. :? Mine does it to and is alot louder when the engine is cold. Its not usually a real problem until it gets louder, but i dont know how bad urs are. I think this is a common problem in VL's with a few K's on the clock. The lifters are hydraulic and cant be adjusted so replacing the faulty lifters is usually the only way to fix them.

yeah what u said about the oil is making me think that it could be noticable now because on the weekend i changed the oil and just used the oil dad had he said it would be alright i think it was 25w mineral oil. i remember last time it had something like 50w castrol synthetic (spelling?) in it and it wasnt as noticable. actually now i think about it it wasnt noticable at all before i changed the oil.

Spend $12 on Nulon Hi-Performance Engine Treatment, put it in with fresh 20w50 or 25w60 oil and your lifter noise will disappear. cheers

I goes with your oil!

it would almost definatley be the lifters. I had the same problem in my 310,000KM Berlina ( not at all helped by the constant 5500RPM brake jobs 8) ) and it only went away by using an engine flush and oil change. Is your oil sludgy? That usually doesnt help either and the engine flush is very effective way of cleaning your engine. I always use Wynn's Engine flush whenever doing an oil change followed by friction proofing. Depending on how bad condition your oil is it might take about 3-4 oil changes to completley get rid of the noise. THe only setback is that Wynn's Engine flush is not available for retail sale and has to be bought through a workshop that deals in Wynn's products.

sometimes the exhaust manifold progressively comes loose and you can start to hear all your valvetrain clicking away. Common problem. Can be a ******* to fix if u break a stud!. myself> rocker arms and tappets are the same thing, different name.

Two things, Most likely : Your lifters, the tik tik noise should be there only when the engine is cold when the oil hasnt circulated throught the whole engine takes about 1 minute after that all you should hear is the opening and closing of the butterfly from the injectors. Secondly : If the noise is deep below your in serious trouble as the keyway, the size of half a 5cent coin is worn. You would have to rip out the radiator and pull the harmonic balancer off and it sits on ya crank. If ya lucky it hasnt eaten into ya crank otherwise you have to pull out ya welder  start welding. I have experience this problem b4. I thought it was the lifter but it wasnt as it threw my timing out until my car was un=drivable. It is then you will know its the wooddruff keyway, TiMING. the Lifters should affect your timing but may cause your car to idle like a dog  Have fun boyz
