well i wanna do it to my car. i have a vl turbo cam and a old turbo (which is from my brothers car), is it worth putting one in my car or buying a vl turbo. i wanna just convert it because i have spend alot of money fixing it up and all i need now is more power.
There are people who will sware black and blue for either way.
For converting yours: you know the car, as you said u have spent money fixing it up. putting a turbo on an NA engine makes the farkn fly, and gives ****e loads of torque. But ur fairly limited to the boost numbers you can run.
Buying a turbo: everything is done and working. You dont need to worry about getting a turbo gearbox, diff, brakes, booster etc. can run more boost and eventurally make more power.
tuff one really. My body was pritty crap, so i've sold it and buying a turbo

i am not really worried at the moment about running the boost too high because i just wanna convert it first then after do some mods to the drivetrain and bottem end rebuild.i am going to run the standard bottem end till i can get more money to get a forged bottem end rebuild
too convert it properlly, you'll have to get a decompression plate for your head, possibly change your fuel pump, injectors, ECU, and your diff and gearbox might last 3 months or so on 7psi. theres also a bunch of other **** you have to do... do a search on here or ring around and get some idea of costs.. i've been quoted from $3000-$6000 for conversion kit, but $1500-$6000 for a vlt engine.. so... its cheaper to buy a second hand engine (but you never know what you'll get)
There is nothing notably wrong with turboing the NA rb30. People say you are much better off changing the engine for a turboed one (rb30et), but dismiss the expense.
A significant gain can be made from almost any NA engine by adding a turbo/supercharger, just check out the huge range of bolt on kits available from CAPA and Chiptorque. These kits offer huge gains in power from cars ranging from hyundais to HSV's.
If you have the budget to buy a RB30et and do a full conversion to VL-turbo spec, then I'd do that, or at a slightly less expensive cost buy an rb20det and matching gearbox/auto out of a R32 skyline and bolt that in .
If you don't have a that type of budget budget (you need at least $2500+), and already have the turbo and cam off an rb30et then do the following.
1. Bolt on the turbo with the use of a VL-t manifold.
2. Get an adapter to join the original exhaust to the turbo outlet (upto $150)
3. Put the cam in.
4. Go and buy a secondhand intercooler (Supra, etc @ $200)
5. Get piping for turbo, intercooler, throttle body made (@ $200 for mild steel)
6. Get car ECU retuned to run the maximum amount of boost (@ $500)
These prices are rough and are used only as a guide, so forgive me if I'm a little out. They will all be less if you can do most of the work yourself.
One thing you will definately need is to retune your ECU. You can do this by going to Chiptorque and getting them to do it (@ $500) or you could by an entry level aftermarket ECU, like wolf 3d or microtech, and get it fitted and tuned for a fairly big cost ($2000).
Although an aftermarket ECU is a big outlay, the benefits are great, futureproofing you, making it easy to modify and retune your engine, or add a completely different engine and still be able to tune. (It'll only cost @ $100 to retune an aftermarket ECU for engine mods compared to $500+ to get your factory ECU retuned  )

VK turbo, why dont u think the VLt ecu would work? it would be ok up to 10psi or so wouldnt it? (not that id be pushing the stock turbs 2much harder). Im in the process of this change over, and thought the vlt ecu would be fine on the NA motor. With a cooler detonation shouldn't be to much of an issue at low psi.
