Hey I was wondering what the effects of driving with the power button on permanantly would be. I've been driving with it on the whole time and just switching it off when u hit a highway at 90 or over. Is this a bad thing to do or wa? And people like to say you'd use more fuel, is this true? It wouldnt be much more fuel would it... j

i cant see anything wrong with doing that. but keeping it with power on is keeping it in a lower gear which will be revving more than overdrive and ultimately using more fuel

I switch power of when i go along the freeway but the rest of the time i have power on.

mine is always on, i only use the overdrive when i am on a highway or freeway or something like that.... Not sure if it uses more fuel or what but overdrive does suck down fuel like no tomorrow....

All commodore models from VL onward that have the "power" button feature have an automatic on feature. If you go to full throttle quicly it will activate power mode. Apparently it also activates if it reaches a certain rev range quickly to (not on full throttle) but how true that is i don't know. Try turning power off and planting it flat to the boards off the line (only up to the speed limit of course) and you will notice the power light comes on. As for round town, no real need for it, the car shouldn't need it to just run around.

its been said (in zoom i think it was) that the gearbox gives in when the economy button is always in, and its been said to only put it on when exceeding speeds on 80km/h over a period of time (a few minutes) like freeway driving and open roads..

yes with the VL if your driving under 80kph then u should have the power button out so it reads power on the dash and when u exceed 80 like on freeway etc then u press it in, otherwiose there will be eccesive wear to the gearbox, and apparently in the original owners manual it actually told u the opposite and after they(holden) were getttin alot of them back for repairs they ecided that they will change it .i hope that made sense i dont think it did. Yeah thats true, if you use overdrive all the time, it will die, this happened to mine, although you will use much more fuel leaving it in 3rd all the time. I don't care, my new box is only 30,000 old and the last one lasted 200,000 so a lot more life left in it, overdrive kicks in about 60km/h and i enjoy the better economy Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I drive with it on all the time anyway - if I need to give it a bit of a kick I don't want to listen to is shift down 18 gears 8O

well considering 4th gear engages at around 50km/h , driving with your power button out to speeds of 90km/h seems stupid to me... it will affect your fuel consumption considerably. It does absolutely nothing however...it doesn't affect how much the car will rev out or anything...I don't know why the little light turns on when you have the power button in when you floor it really... bit silly. but yeah anyway... na auto boxes are homo. l8r !

my dad has been a mechanic for holden for 20 years and one thign they learnt with vl gearboxes was it was better to leave them in power around town . apparentyl better on the tranny. he ran his auto vl for years with it on power mode

thats what my auto mech told me too. 4th gear is piss weak and does engage as at speeds below 60 to lower engine rpm, this overuse of 4th leads it to wear out quicker, i only use mine over 70 or on long 60 road when i want to

so in other words you saying keep the power button on all the time.. i have noticed when you have overdrive on and you give it to the car to take off at a set of lights the pwr lights up on the dash then it goes away.. i just drive with pwr on anyway only time i use over drive is when its over 80kms as some people do... if the auto gearbox int he vl is so crap whats a better auto gearbox to use then??

i drive with the button in (power led off right? i think my led is screwed!), which i notice doesnt rev as high when its OUT my reasoning is fuel consumption would be higher since u r rev'ing higher

leave the power button on when not on the freeway - as in econ mode it roots the gearbox

Gents, I put it on at around 70kmh thats when I notice the revs go up on the tacho display usually redlines out at about 130km thou and have to switch it off. I find that you get more response dropping the car in 2nd gear from about 20kmh to 60kmh and then a switch into drive and whack the pwr button on. Cheers, JR.

I went to Auto Transmission place and they told me my AUTO N/A is rooted They took pan off and the plastic bits I think they sit between the gears was in pieces ,Mechanic told me this is because car more than likely driven in ECO mode with T-bar light in I need ot do full re-build to box now car has done 220,000k So yeah it may rev lower and use a bit less fuel ,but in long run to cruise around town/city have PWR LED on in Dash showing Transmission will last longer guys/girls Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

So mate what are you trying to say… Is it better to drive with the overdrive button on all the time or just when overtaking or towing? Cheers, Joel.
