Hey, Just a warning, i drive a VS 5ltr ute and was pulled over today and fined 105 bucks for driving a high powered vehicle, the cop told me not to drive it home and not to drive it until im off my P's. Now this is a problem for me because im going to be driving my car every day. This rule is a complete crock of **** in my book, while i was pulled over a P plater in a VL turbo with a big front mount cooler drove past and the cop didnt even glance at him, just because i have a V8 he decided to pull me over. Now apparently i can get some kind of exception notice that will allow me to drive it? who knows, but while all these cops are cracking down so hard, i suggest you fuel injected V8 drivers stay off the road! He said any commodore VN - VS you cannot drive with a 5ltr on your P's. **** that i say. andrew

Its a Power to Weight Ratio thing. Im pretty sure only a few cars ever come out of the factory with more power to weight than is actually legal (for young drivers to be excluded). I will try and find the figures kw to kg. cos im in the same boat as you. but i know it doesnt mean just cos u have a v8 your eneligable.

not only is there power to weight ratios for P platers, but there is also capacity to weight ratios :/

Yeah Hornet is right, i know that in Victoria there is something along the lines of 5.0L in a VS which is a little heavier than a VL is considered too much for a P plater.

i think these rules are completely justified myself. i dont want inexperienced P platers who think they are peter brock (not saying you are one of these but we all know theres plenty) driving around with gutsy cars on the same roads as me and my family. they are dangerous enough in mitsubishi colts.

my car came from the factory with 185 kw. I know this does exceed the limit, but the thing i dont like is, 4 and 6 cylinder turbo cars which are substantially faster and lighter than my car, get away scott free.. Hopefully i can get an excemption from vic roads, because this is the only car i can drive, and i need it for work!

You CAN drive any fuel inected 8 VN - VT series 1 on your p's because they are not 5 litres, they're 4.9 litre 304's.

Yeah my mate got done for the same thing, he was driving a VN SS on his P's copped pulled him over fined him. I think it is power to weight as well 125kw per tonne. Have a look at the vic roads web site you can find out on there.

These are cars which have a power to weight ratio greater than 125 kilowatts per tonne or with a capacity to weight ratio of more than 3.5 litres per tonne. A list of cars which may not be driven is available from VicRoads Registration and Licensing offices. You may drive a high powered car if your employer requires you to drive it in the course of your employment, or if you hold an exemption issued by VicRoads. VicRoads will only grant an exemption if: it is the only car owned by your family the car is used for business as well as social use and no other non high powered car is owned by your family. Applications for a high powered vehicle exemption must be made in person at a VicRoads office. Exemptions are for a nominated vehicle and must be carried at all times.

I can feel your pain on this one i know a guy who drives a twin turbo 300ZX and hes on his P's this car is not a stocko and has cooler exhast rims and many other bits and pieces pulls high 12's 1/4 mile and he gets away with it dont know how though might have something to do with him being a dodgy wog. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
