As som eof you may or may not know I was selling my car, it had (what I thought was) a blown oil seal in the turbo, I have decided to keep the car, fix it up then sell it.
The thing it is doing is when you give it a bit of stick (taking off from lights, going up a hill etc) after a while (5-10seconds of boosting) a ****load of white smoke would come out the exhaust, It has got worse and worse every time I drive it (not very often) I thought it was the oil seals in the turbo, but now Im not too sure
I just pulled the turbo off and had a look at it, the exhaust manifold has the same amount of black carbony **** in it as the turbo (which is a fair bit, on both sides of the exhaust wheel) this makes me think that the oil is burning in the cylinder!!!!
I know its not coming in through the intake cause I have a catch can and there is no oil in the cooler piping at all, The only thing I can think of is that I have a broken ring or 2 and the boost is presuring the crankcase and forcing oil up into the cylinder (it ONLY does it when boosting for a while)
But I havn't lost any power apart from when it is under boost (wont reach 11psi) no funny noises, the oil doesn't smell like fuel. The other thing is that there is the same amount of carbon in every runner on the exhaust manifold (ie, all cylinders burning oil???)
The only other thing that I can think of that I have done to the car is I pull different oil in it, I used Mobil Synthetic (not mobil 1) I think the viscosity was 5-20 or 10-25, something like that, what ever it is its a fair bit thiner than the oil I used to run (40-60 or 30-50 I think) could the thiner oil be too thin and be pushing past the rings????
Thanx for reading my esay, I just hope someone know what the *** is going on with my motor!
Thanx again
Brendan

If the crankcase was being pressurised, there would be crapload of oil going into your catch can rather than the oil being forced into the cylinder.
Also you will know if a ring is broken (more likely a ringland fractured), as it will sound like it is running on 5 cylinders.
When you take your oil cap off, is there any blow-by coming out?
Also, what do the spark plugs look like?
If its an auto check your not sucking oil up the auto vacum tube that connects to the inlet manifold, this is common and makes a lot of people think that they are burning oil...
Had same problem with mine cept billowing white smoke non stop. Blocked pcv valves were the cause, too mutch crankcase pressure wont allow oil to return to sump from the turbo and the oil builds up in turbo and bipasses seals. also check oil level as causes same prob if over full. Remeber turbo seals aren't realy designed to seal oil its only a secondary function!.
I have had all three common symtoms to this problem with my SR20DET.
1. Front seal in Turbo went........had oil all thru the intake system, to the point it was drippin out my K&N filter....no smoke from exhaust.
2. Rear seal in Turbo went.......no oil in intake system whatsoever.....pissed it out of the exhaust however.
3. Cracked piston ring land/ melted piston.......smoke from exhaust, ran rough as oil in that cylinder was fouling the plug, and down on compression.
My guess ....rear seal on its way out......as you say it only smokes under load, no oil in intake. check play in shaft...if seals gone will no doubt need a full recon.
Enjoy
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
I havn't cheacked the blow by with out the oil cap on, Ill try that
Its manual so its not burning Trans fluid
The PCV Valve isn't blocked and still moves fine so I dont think thats the problem
Im going to to the compression test today and hopefully rule out a ring/piston problem, thanx for your replys
