Hey, was wondering if anyone can get their VL drifting well? I'm not talking about heavy throttle at the exit of a corner inducing power oversteer but proper pre-apex sideways drift.
I've been enlightened by the recent drift meet here in South Australia and was wondering what sort of set-ups people use in their sideways happy VLs.
At the drift day today was a Gemini running a RB30E and 5 speed, and the mandatory locked diff, did quite well

Drift meet was at Port Gawler off road hire park, its a go-kart track so quite narrow and windy, some good action though. It was pretty heavily advertised, not sure how ya could have missed it

BTW. got some little plans for my VL, starting with a 5 speed conversion, changes to suspension (springs, shocks, swaybars, bushes, noltec camber kit), and a mechanical LSD centre. Hopefully before this Winter!

How was the Drift meet? I saw a aerial picture of the track and it looked very narrow.

12-01-03, 16:49 GMT+10#10 Hahahaha about drifting VLs?
In my open wheeler auto stock suspension VL I can get pre-apex drift into the second corner of esses, crossed up very nicely (in the wet). Of course a 180SX is going to drift better than a VL ever can, but I may as well set up my VL a little bit to have some fun.
An AE86 Toyota Sprinter has a very similar suspension set-up to a VL albeit in a 300kg lighter car, and the live-axle Sprinters are classed right up there in the Japanese drift ranks. 8)

13-01-03, 07:16 GMT+10#13 Good luck getting a VL to drift properly
You'd need to rip out the whole suspension setup and replace it with something fully adjustable with both camber and ride height adjustments.. youd also need a decent whack of power at the back wheels..

13-01-03, 10:15 GMT+10#14 yup he's right there.. need at least 280+rwhp in a 180sx or Silvia to do proper drifts, otherwise you have to go way to fast to have her step out at required gear.

13-01-03, 11:22 GMT+10#15 I'll be very suprised if you can get a VL to drift. Other than stepping the tail out for a brief moment, I think that would be it..... If some can come up with adecent vid of a VL holding a decent drift send it to me I'd love to see it. and not that vid of a VL in the wet either!!! as hard as it is to say ..... I think exstatic is right on this one. ....

13-01-03, 11:56 GMT+10#16 Its easy to set your car up for drifting, find the setup that gives you the most traction around the circuit, then set it up the complete opposite. those pieces of **** are set up soo hard that they cant get traction at all, run hard street rubber, get neg camber all round.
A more exciting way to drift is to race on the circuit in the pouring rain (with worn wets) and hit puddles mid-corner at 200+kms, while you have 30 other cars on the track around you.

Sounds like fun And a nice way to scare the living sh** out of yourself!
Dunno how much power you'd need to pull off some nice low speed dry drifts (60km/h), I'm guessing around 100-140rwkw should do the trick ok to light up the bags.
I'm looking into about 130rwkw out of a n/a engine with a AVO stage 3 cam, grinded lifters and accessories, Chiptorque computer, Apexi SAFC (not sure if necessary), and of course extractors and full exhaust system.
Mechanical LSD might help... someone told me of a place called 4WD
Systems South Aus (0883690033) who do a diff centre to fit into VL n/a and turbo diffs for about $700 for anyone who is interested.
Cheers, Craig.

13-01-03, 21:18 GMT+10#18 ide do a turbo conversion with that money your spending on an n/a tune.
decomp plate, t03, manifolds, works.

14-01-03, 10:15 GMT+10#20 **** drifting in a VL, they would have to be one of the most tail happy commodores around.. I reckin they are sick as they are, can easily lose traction in 2nd gear with not too many mods 8)
im just a fan of wheelspin
