I am going to be removing my Plenum Chamber in a week or so to do some work on the engine, however when I go to Install it again with a new Gasket, do I need a Torque Wrench to tighten the Bolts up again? The Service Manual says to do so, however it also says to tighten Oil Pan/Diff Plate Bolts and Spark Plugs to a certain Torque Setting... :? Can anyone give me some information about this?

Best bet is to do just what the book says and you cant go wrong. Just like when you tighten your head bolts, if they all arnt the same recommended torque, then you could warp your head.

i removed my standard plenum to put on a polished one. put on a new gasket while i was there... just redid the bolts up without a torque wrench - tightened them up to a fair amount (nothing ball breaking - but had a bit of muscle put into it). Has been fine for me for the last 12 or more months...
(oh.. another thing, the bolts you see on top - arnt the only bolts - theres one underneath in the middle (goes between runner 4 and 5 up to the plenum) - cant remember if theres more under there (might be another 2) - i did this all without a manual and didnt know about that bolt... took me a while to figure it out too.. heheh)

I know its necessary to use a Torque Wrench on your Head, but on Spark Plugs and Oil Pans? I'm sure a lot of you guys take your Plenum Chambers off all the time, do most of you use a Torque Wrench? I do like to do everything as precisely as possibly and safely, however a Torque Wrench is around $200 and I will hardly use it really...

Well using a torque wrench is the recommended way to go
However when your tightening your bolts up and u snap one off cause u thought it just wasnt tight enough, when it was actually 3 times the recommended torque, i will laugh at you.
And then i guess u will be posting about how to recover a snapped bolt!

i never managed to break any of the bolts on holding the plenum together... gave it a bit too..
some of the bolts would be bloody hard to get a torque wrench into anyway...

If you can find me a mechanic that uses a torque wrench for anything other than a head I will be amazed, and they "know" what they are doing apparently

There will be no need to laugh at me, I am a lot wiser in my Bolt Tightening and Loosening than before... After snapping so many Bolts on the VL because the Thread was simply Rusted, I've learned to use lots of CRC/WD-40 and lots of Caution, Fuel Filter Brackets and things alike are one thing to snap a Bolt on, Plenum Chambers and Diffs are another... Thats mainly why I'm asking, to get an idea of what experience other people have had, I'm sorry if I can't afford $200 for a Tool just to do one job on my car... :?

just do it up nice and tight without a torque wrench - those bolts shouldnt break unless you REALLY try to (im talking breaker bars and serious leverage !)

10-01-03, 21:43 GMT+10#10 Yeah I think thats what I'll do, the worst that can happen is that a Bolt does snap off and I have to pay someone to get it out... I'm pretty sure that can be done...

I wasnt having a go at ya, i was just speaking from experience. Like snapping that blasted head bleeder bolt. Damn that thing sucked ass.

11-01-03, 14:33 GMT+10#12 Yes, that would've sucked, why were you doing a Bleed Bolt up so tightly though? How do you go about getting snapped bolts out anyway, I've always wondered, it seems impossible... 8O Unless you drill it through, which isn't always an option... :? I'm fearing that my Seat Belt Bolts will snap when I try and undo them to replace the mechanisms...

11-01-03, 15:04 GMT+10#13 I should have replaced the bolt when i took it out, seemed like it was going in ok but then the ****er snapped......
Anyway just go buy a kit called easyout at a Autopro store or something, they dont sell for too much. They are opposite thread to all other bolts. So to screw them in you would go anti-clockwise.
Then ya just drill a hole in the snapped bolt screw in the right sized easy out and use a heap of wd40 and the likes, and the bolt should just come out.
Good luck...
