Hey guys, As alot of guys here know i have been after a vlt calais in good condition for the 10k budget area + or - a tad for a fair while now... I've also had a keen interest to turbo my pretty immaculate n/a berlina but getting a hold of parts seems to be fairly hard and expensive.. then i would have to get help getting it installed.. more $$ Anyway i have always liked the V8 vr/vs utes.... I was wondering if there is any advice or knowledge about these utes.. if the vr is much different to the vs... i was looking at vr 5spd 5L utes.. (even v6... performance comparisons etc..) so i was after any info u guys might have or problems with them.. is there a web site i can get info or visit like this one? I'm really just considering all my options and see what is the best out there.. So basically im asking your opinions and info on the topics.. should i keep lookin for the vlt calais, turbo mine.. look into the v8 utes?? Ok well i'll leave it at that and see what u guys/girls have to say.... cheers -Mike [email removed]

Mike For a daily driver the V8 ute would be nice. VLT Calais are prone to theft....read guaranteed to attract thieves and they are very easy to steal. I previously had a VS BT1 V8 sedan and absoulutely loved it. Only prob was the auto box which are very weak, so yeh go a manual V8 ute. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

hey mate, i recently sold my VL calais turbo and purchased a HSV VS SS ute, its mad, its a 5ltr 5 speed, with an LSD. and i love it. i dont have to worry about it being stolen, i was always paranoid with my VL. As for the V6 model, they are also nice, easily keep up with any 5ltr.. I havnt had any problems with my ute, except for an EPA notice, but i have a full stainless 3" exaust with extractors, so its pretty much my own fault. Dont listen to anyone that say you cant drive it, coz u can.. in victoria anyway. Price wise, i picked mine up for 18500 and its a genuine HSV.. make sure u check out the numbers inside the engine bay, it only had 101000 ks on it at the time. Another thing i like about the 5ltr utes is the reliabilitly, the 5ltr engine is as tuff as nuts. If you have any specific questions dont hesitate to PM me coz ive been reading up on these things ever since i started advertising my VL. cheers. - Andrew

Got the ute for sure. I am on my L's and buying a VR V6. I'd go the V8 but I don't have the extra money.

i don't know about the V6 but mine seems to pretty good on the highway... not to bad in the city, just dont punch it everywhere.. pretty much could match my vl or very similar... thats only after a few days though heheh, i will see over time... ooo yeh i got a vr ss :P sedan.. was more practical then the ute and popped up at the right price  this is off a site i found... for the VR series.. which is similar to the vs i guess.. cept the v6 ecotec may be better... V6 Manual: (City / Highway): 11.0 / 7.0 L/100km V6 Automatic: (City / Highway): 12.0 / 7.6 L/100km V8 Manual: 14.0 / 8.5 L/100km V8 Automatic: 15.0 / 9.0 L/100km

Mike mate the biggest difference between the VS is the sequential injection, which in your case means jack all because i beleive the VR 5.0L was the same as the VS 5.0L. The V6 is alright on the highway, will sit comfortably on about 1800rpm at about 110km/h and only really sits on like 2200rpm for about 140km/h. There is one thing i would recomend doing and that is a Powerchip... these increase torque, therefor the pulling power on the highway is so much better. In terms of fuel... its a commodore, if you have a heavy foot, you better have a big wallet. Like any commodore, if you drive it hard, the fuel bill will be hard on the wallet. Off about 23L i seem to manage in the vicinity of 240km to 250km thats round town. If i push her hard it drops to 200...

if you have a $10k budget, you'll have a hard time finding a V8 VR ute.. i haven't seen one (thats in decent nic) for less then about $18k. nice car if you can get yourself one though!
