If you're going to modify a 3.8, get a VS Engine (Commodore or Lexcen ) and speak to CAPA down in Sydney or Melbourne about a supercharger kit.
I know if you run something like a Powerdyne kit on 9 pound on a proper setup it'll be good for 13's.
Other than that you won't find alot more than extractors, exhaust, air filter.

at 145,000 you should be ok for a little while on low boost. You would be wanting to look at boring, pistons and rings though.
A new Kit is going for about $6,000 check out the for sale section here though because there is one here for about $4000 i think.
www.capa.com.au has all the info your after. Dont expect much from the 3.8L tho, there not all that crash hot
on another note, doesnt look like the trusty old Toyota Lexcen has a kit going for it, look under Toyota section, and its all for landcruisers + Hilux. Shame my88vl, your dream has been crushed.

South is right... the 3.8's weren't built by holden, or for that matter Toyota or Buick as a performance engine. You can do some work on them but its not going to come close to what you can do to an RB30ET/RB25DET.
If you want something thats blown with the balls to match, get an injected V8 one.

a mate of mine has a HSV V6 VR ute and he gave me the closest drag ive had in my old VL turbo, he kept up nicely. its dont about 140 000 ks and still goes pretty hard.

Yeah i reckon within a whisker of each other both stock as a rock.
But as soon as you bring a spanner near the rb30 you will unleash the modifying powa! And the ute will be toast..

Been there, done that and I think you're about right with all you've said 8)
What are peoples thoughts on aftermarket performance chips? They seem to get a pretty good wrap at www.powerchip.com.au. Ive been thinking of one maybe for my VS.
Mate in the VS its only worth doing if you can get extractors and a full 2.5" exhaust. Otherwise you won't notice much and i think they recomend the exhaust be upgraded anyway.
talk to LJ38L on here, he has a Capa blower kit to suit a V6 for sale.. will give you a big power increase.. he only wants 3k for it.. look in the for sale section...
If i put on extractors, full exhaust and a k & N air filter what sort of power would i be getting? how much would all this cost? Is the 3.8 a dogs breakfast engine???? MY88VL is you copy commodore Ecotec?

not much really, forced induction is the way to go. Ive got a capa powerdyne blower for sale. It made 161rwkw on my VR V6.
what percentage of power is lost if this car is on gas. Its suposed to be as economical as a 4 cylinder, just hope it doesnt have the power as one. Getting a set of SS leather new seats to bolt straight in, should give me a bit more performance :P . STAGE 111 how does your exhaust sound now? much power difference? Is that expensive?
it had a big power difference and it sounds a hell of alot better, Because my car is a HSV is came from the factory with extractors, twin cat system and a 2.5 inch exaust, the cats were hollow and it sounded like a carbied V8, the day i changed it over it was running better, better on fuel and sounding alot better. $1500 is a good price for a full stainless set up. Gas will not take that much power as it is a fuel injected engine, as long as its serviced regularly, and ran on petrol once a week.
