Our vp calais keeps overheating! if its stationary the temperatuere goes up really high but when you drive it the temp stays fairly cool. We just got a new radiator so it could be something to do with the trasmition cooling/coolant cooling. Please help!

It could be the engine not breathing properly. Try checking if the air filter is clean. Or even put a pod filter in or something to make it breath efficiantly so it wont overheat. Hope this helps Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Umm...why would you take out a cold air box and put a pod filter in to suck warm air from under the bonnet to solve an overheating problem? VP's have an electric fan right? Check that this is cutting in, sounds like it may not be clicking on early enough, if it becomes a real problem wire the fan up to run all the time.

yeah it would be the fan that cuts in on warm idle, and if the air con is on, its located at the front of the radiator, check it out. happened to me in my old VN. andrew

One thing you should note in any car with the 3800 is that when the air con is off (or disconnected in my case), your car will run hotter. My suspicion is a faulty fan.

Don't worry i agree completely with the fan shroud, don't remove it, it was there for a reason... Something else you can do, if you never use air con, disconnect the power from the compressor, undo the lines to the condenser, and pull it out. You will run warm at stand still but hell it's icy cold when you're doin 110km/h... think of all that free ram air on the radiator. Something else i noticed because of my accident... (may not be the same for the VP) but where the condenser unit is mounted, there is a bracket at the bottom where you have bolts going through to hold the condenser in. If you've hit something like a gutter or one of those parking things, then you may have tapped it back pushing a bolt across a radiator tube... this happened to mine and was lucky to escape radiator damage. Easy to check, just undo the bottom bolts for the condenser and pull it forward a little, climb under and with a torch you will see. Also, talk to your mechanic, he may offer a free pressure test on it. I know Red Devil Radiators in QLD do. Another suggestion, check your radiator cap itself, it could very well be faulty. Or if as you say, there's a new radiator in there it may be the wrong cap. Suggestion 3 - what about your thermostat?

if u r still lost for answers it could be an electrical problem. when i 1st got my VP spac it had a dirty earth under the bonnet which caused the temp gauge to rise right up whilst stationary. once i cleaned the earth connection next to the battery it never rises above 1/2, and my headlights r brighter aswell

it is a fan problem reason being a. new radiator b. if it was a thermostat it would get hot all the time not only at idle. c. they dont usually do head gaskets. also i presume u r talking v6. if u r u cant remove the fan shroud as it is part of the fan assembly. faulty rely may cause fan 2 switch on and off 2 soon. let the car idle and see at what point on your gauge the fan cuts in. it should cut in at about 1/2 way. if it cuts in any later or only turns on for 30 second or so and turn off again it is a relay problem. att: my88vl stop plugging my oposition : red devil ( only joking ) I say this as i manage moss st radiator in slacks creek.

forgot 2 mention: dont hard wire a thermofan to run constant as 1) they burn out after 1 year or so if new and 2) it causes your car 2 run 2 cold and use excessive fuel as autochoke will continue 2 run. hope i could help
