Hey guys,
i'm new to this board and was wondering what price to pay for a Vl that i've found. you guys seem to know a fair bit and i must admit i'm kinda a newbie in the car scene.
i've found a pretty sweet 86 VL thats got:
RWCert, mag wheels, tinted windows, alarm + immobiliser, REG till next july, new windscreen, new catalytic converter, its in good condition inside.
however, it has been in a fairly serious accident(front was all smashed in(all fixed now, although different color) and battery has exploded as seen from all the rust above where the battery sits under the bonnet), i actually think its been in 2 but the owner says only 1, its done 315,000 kms, has paint scrached in small places and small damage to the drivers side back panel. (next to the boot)
he wants 3100+. however, i'm really only willing to go to 2600 maybe 2700 if i was feeling REALLY generous. i've found another one in geelong (i'm from melbourne) thats pretty much the same for 2900. except the color is diff (maroon but it doesn't really bother me)
what should i do? what price should i pay if i take this one? (i dont particulaly feel like driving all the way to geelong) what would your advice be?
thanks very much.

i wouldn't buy one with that many k's that has been seriously damaged before, rust is a killer as well. i would keep looking, something will definately pop up.

that sounds expensive to me. i got my 87 VL Berlina in immaculate condition inside and out, only 175,000k's, 2-Pak paint, cop rims, new exhaust system and no rust at all for $3500. i also saw a VL exec for $2500 with 2 1/2 exhaust, hi flow cat, extractors, mag wheels, perfect berlina interior and high stall converter, all it needed was a respray.
i say keep looking, it is worth the wait to find a decent VL. look out for the ones that have been thrashed.

definitely keep looking. for that price you can do much better, just a matter of waiting for the right one to come along. dont just buy the first one coz you want a car, you will regret it. it has ticks in all the wrong boxes.

alright, i think its fairly agreed i should keep waiting and find something else. but where (apart from the trading post) should i keep looking? what kind of price should i pay for one that had basically the same components as the one i was going to get? also, what kind of things should i look out for? (both good and bad)

i bought mine thru the AGE. if you think about the type of people that read it ( being a more mature paper ) then the people that put ads in the Age are more of the older variety.. They kinda look after their car a bit more. Rather than being a young adult telling Trading Post that they decided to keep their car so they wont have to pay the 30 bucks for a pre paid ad...

Why are they so expensive, I've seen VL's go at auction with 300,000kms. good original condition with little rust for $1500. These had rego as well so I would definitely keep looking.

27-12-02, 22:48 GMT+10#13 Ok,
it being non-turbo, how can i get a bit more "GO" out of it. Nothing major just a bit better acceleration and response??
the only prob with it is it is that awful beige colour.
YUK!

02-01-03, 01:24 GMT+10#15 Being a Beige VL is a problem? Hurry up and buy it quick, theres nothing faster than a Beige VL! Who cares about Mods that thing will beat any other colour VL, trust me, I know... On a serious note, I actually like the Beige Colour, Andy's VL is one of the best... Along with mine of course...
