Lately my n/a calais has been stalling when driving after its warmed up, and cutting out for seemingly no reason. I heard it could be the Crank angle sensor, so i did a search and found some info on how to test the sensor and connectors using a multimeter. "With the multi meter set to volts, back probe terminal 4 (yellow wire) with the positive probe at the connector harness and connect the negative probe to engine ground. Turn the ignition key to the ON mode. The voltage measured should be 5 volts. Turn the ignition key to CRANK mode. A voltage reading of 0.2 - 0.5 volts should be measured." (taken from a good site: http://lightning.prohosting.com/~v8mate/cas1.html ) When I do this the engine cuts out and wont start until i take the multimeter off the wire! As soon as both the positive has touched the yellow wire and the negative earthed, it just cuts out totally, hence I can't get a voltage reading to see if it is faulty. Would this mean I have a bad earth somewhere? Has anyone had similar problems? :?

looking at what he says i think he doesnt intend for the motor to be running when you perform the tests - but rather that you CRANK it, and watch the output while the motor is cranking. hey says to remove the fuel pump fuse first so he obviously doesnt want the motor running while the tests are done.

Sorry I pasted the wrong bit. At the end of the CAS article is some diagrams from his multimeter, with engine running at idle (750rpm) based on the same connections I described in the first post. multi meter capture of 120 degree signal taken at idle ( 750 rpm @ operating temperature ) multi meter capture of 1 degree signal taken at idle ( 750 rpm @ operating temperature ) These are the ones I am trying to get a reading from the multimeter for. cheers Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Hey mate, Just a suggestion, it could be the coil. When theses guys are on their way out they work till they hit a curtain temp then cut out. Hope that helps, Sully

thanks sully the car finally died altogether and wouldnt start. Replaced the CAS now its good as new. When testing the CAS connectors with the multimeter it was cutting out i think because of the auto-ranging multimeter i was using. Used an older one and got readings a.o.k. cheers
