What's the best box for 2 x 12" subs?

Hi guys, I've got 2 12" subs in my VL currently. They're firing into the boot, and they're in a sealed enclosure. My mate has a VK, and he just got a sub box put in his car. It's a bandpass box with 2 ports running up through the parcel shelf running similar subs to me, but the bass is twice as loud. I'm deciding strongly now on changing my box to a Bandpass box with ports. Do you guys think a bandpass box is the way to go for loud bass? I don't care if it isn't that crystal clear bass. Thanks

what do you mean by 'similar' subs? What brand? what model? Some subs are better suited to different boxing applications than others. I don't know a lot about bandpass boxes, but vented boxes will always give you more bass (higher SPL) than sealed boxes. BUT, they also only offer strong bass at the frequency that the ports are tuned to. This makes them often sound very monotone, and not anywhere near as tight as a sealed box. From what I understand though, a bandpass box will give you the amaount of bass that a sealed enclosure wil give you, the same frequency range restrictions, but tighter, more controlled bass. If you're after more all out oomph, i'd say go for it. But check with an experienced installer first. The guy at the stones corner Autobarn knows heaps about boxes. If you're anywhere near there, drop in and ask him. Cheers! Ben.

My subs that I've got in my car are 2 Soundstream SPL 12's. They're dual Voice coil subs. The sub's that my mate's got in his VK are Rockford Fostgate Punch series subs. He's got 2 of em and they're dual voice coil too. The Soundstreams and the RF's both can handle pretty much the same amount of power, and they both cost pretty much the same. Thanks for the advice but. I'll definately go the Bandpass then. Dave.

Hey Gatecrasher, before you do, I've got someting that will be of really big help. I've been going over it for a while now 'cause I've just landed myself an SPL15 (hoping to get another one soon). SPL subs rip it up, and you were right... I think they are similar to RF Punch. Anyways, If I can get you're email address, I've got a box design manual produced by Soundstream in PDF format that goes way into depth about all the different types of boxes. Then it gives reccommended enclosures for each type of soundstream sub, including SPL12's. They give diagrams with dimensions of ports and everything!

When I got the subs, a manual came with 'em. It has stuff in it about frequency curves, and different box enclosures. I've had a look at it, and it seems to be pretty comprehensive. I don't know if my manual is the same one you have, so it would be great if you could send us urs anyway. My e-mail address is: [email removed] Thanks mate
