Hi all, I am about to get a vl turbo motor freshened up. Looking at the bottom end first, i have to choose what pistons to put in the thing. Since the bottom ends are pretty good standard i don't want to spend big dollars on forged pistons. So do i just get: - standard vl turbo pistons or - hypatech pistons Hoping a few people could share some knowledge on getting a vl turbo motor freshened up especially what pistons they used, keeping in mind i will be boosting it are there any other pistons that are worth looking at that are not forged. ie ACL pistons Also had a quick search about o-ringing block and types of gaskets etc. Still undecided whether to o-ring or not, any knowledge as to what gasket i should use would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Brad

the most common piston available for a vlt is the acl cast (20 or 40 thou over) , these will set u back around 550 , it comes with rings and gudgeons too. other things u should do is get ur block cleaned and bored/honed , ur crank reground and linished , ur rods resized , new bearings (b/e and mains) and get it all balanced , thats it. basic freshen up of ur bottom end. this should set u back around 1500.

thanks for the replies, i looked into the acl pistons and got told they were no good for the boost i am wanting to run. A few places have said that the rings or somethin have a tendency to crack (break off) when boosted to around 14psi. With a few places telling me to steer clear of the acl pistons all together. So am i left with choosing from the hypatech piston which is a coated piston or standard vl turbo pistons. Is their anything else at all i should consider?

i'm using acl casts that are ceramic coated. the only reason that pistons and rings break is due to denonation!!! (unless you melt a piston in which case it will detonate first, or over rev it and pull the gudgen out the bottom) with the right tuning (staying very clear of detonation) there is no reason that you can't run into the low 11s with ease, even 10s. it has been done many times before with motors that have have never had the bottom ends apart. o-ringing the head or block is worth the $80-100. but you'll have to run a copper head gasket that will cost about $150 if i remember right. you can get the gaskets in different heights to get the compression right too. have fun Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
