hey everyone, i recently found a VL ('88 Exec auto) that im interested in buying, though its got a few problems, these being: - need new boot lid - need new indicater stalk - need back rest of rear seat - need new front bumper - need new/repair rear bumper - need new locks (doors/boot) - few other minor things the good side of the car is: - paint is in fair/good condition (though not great) - has pursuit mags with 205 tyres - tinted windows, not too dark. - started first go and idelled well for the five minutes we were standing around. - has extractors and 2.5" pipe all through (standard cat/muffler *maybe*) - interior is still in good condition the car was stolen and had bits stripped from it, but has slowly been put back together. so a little thrashing perhaps but it ran, started first time and at idel ran smooth. the question is, how much would you think this is worth? also, there was a 'tic tic tic tic' kinda noise coming from the engine.. is this a problem? lookin forward to some replies s. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

unless the k's were Genuinely really low i wouldnt pay more than like 2k for that, probably less. ticking is most likely the lifters. new bumpers and seat will be easy, indicator stalk is pretty easy too, new locks is a bit of a pain. if you do get it, get a solex set ($100 - about double the cost of the normal type).

I certainly wouldn't be paying any more than like 2 grand for that thing. Ticking lifters can be pricey and have other problems.

ive seen them go for around 2k with a reasonably body and paint and the only work they needed was a few electronics.. maybe take a bit more of a look around first.

He's right. Sounds like a bit of work and money is needed to get it up to scratch. depends too on if it's registered and how much rego it has. I'd say no more than about $1000-$1200 if it doesn't have rego and not much more even if it does!

Cept the one down here was a 5 speed manual and it was a LE. My mate brought his private sale for the princely sum of $800. And it had the same problems with a smashed front bar, cracked rear bar, fubared locks, white boot lid (on a dark blue car) etc Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I bought a rusty VL with a shot 5 speed, smoky motor and wobbly front end with 300,000 kms on it for $1500 with 12 months rego, the owner was originally selling it for $3000 (too much) but was my fathers workmate and offered it for $2000,got to his place with the $2000,found out there was like a 25 % stamp duty on it so I really got the car for $1500. I swapped the motor from my 430,000 km VL (which has major front end damage) into it which was actually in better condition than the 300,000 km motor, swapped a rebuilt 5 speed over from that car as well (bought it and did a 5 speed conversion to the other car),fitted the tie rod ends which the owner threw in,fitted the p/steer rack & ends which I rebuilt myself I then swapped over the nolathane kitted swing arms and fitted one new ball joint (I had replaced the other beforehand),swapped the FE2 package over, cut all of the rust out from around the front & rear windows, doors and roof, then welded in metal plates, bare metalled the whole car (had stuffed metallic paint on it) my brother & I sparingly used bodyfiller to reshape the rust repaired sections, sprayed 12 litres of filler primer on the car then file finished it. My brother then went over it with 12 litres of Canary yellow paint while he was on holidays and when I "was" working. Still needs completing after I get re employed. I am swapping the ugly depressing blue interior for the beige/brown interior which comes from my wrecked VL,a the VL I have now has a lot of 1988 parts in it though it is an 86 model. If you want a decent VL which you don't want to spend any money on you have to pay about $3000 - $4000 (private sale, more in a saleyard) for one, don't expect to get a low km one too easily as they are an old car

that tic tic tic noise, was it really fast, or was it easily defined. All vl engines ive heard have had this ( really fast ) i think its the fan clutch. I dont think its a problem.

I dont think its a problem. the fan clutches dont tick. injectors do and yes every VL i have seen has made that noise. but lifters are louder and sound a little different. to see if its just the injectors you hear then put a piece of hose to your ear and the other end on an injector. if the noise was there just after starting and went away when warmed up its most likely lifters.

the tic noise was kinda like, along with the revs. more revs the faster the tic. it was about four or five tic's a second (heh, cant think of another way to measure the speed) at idel. clint, its a maroon executive. sorry to hear of your loss, i hope you find it and the losers that stole it and punish them, your own way. this guy had owned it for awhile now, and it was stolen from him and recovered again. thanks for the replies everyone, theyve help me gain a more general opinion of price to offer. unfortunately he wanted more then i was willing to pay (says he could get $2k for it). :I maybe next time hey. s.

yeah thats just the normal sound i think. INJECTORS thanks man . go have a look at some more. If u still like it, give him your number and ask him to ring u if he has an offer and u want to match it. i think most vls get more than 2k. When my mate was selling his immac vl n/a. He eventually got 4800 for it, stereo etc... Some foreign bloke down the road tried to tell him it was worth no more that $1000 lol. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

My VL made the same ticking noise once the engine was warm. i found the noise goes in cycles every 10 to 15 seconds, mechanic and everyone i spoke to said it was the hydraullic lifters which are pretty costly to replace. But it could be just that the timing gear is warn or out of place? My mates VL engine had the same problem, but he got the timing gear looked at and the ticking noise went away.
