Guys i know this topic has been done to death, but i still have a few questions.
Well im considering doing the head swap on my rb30, now i want to run the car as N/A not turbo. Now i know that the rb25 de head is n/a so if i get one of these and bolt it on can i use the rb25 ecu to run my rb30/25 engine without having to get the ecu reprogrammed.
also would the rb25det head be alright to run as N/A or is it specifically ported for a turbo.
also same as the rb26 head could that be run as N/A.
where can i get an rb25 head or engine, and what would be a resonable price to pay for it?
also what else from the rb30 can bolt onto this engine?
extractors?
inlet & plenum?
cheers

Did u eva find ur car again ?
Wat are ur plans now with a car ?
extractors... no.... but rb20 ones do

nope my car is lost forever.
its been almost 3 months now and nothing, probablly stripped for parts or rebirthed.
the one i got now isnt as good as my other one, i still cant get used to the car even though its still a vl its not the same.
im thinking of doing the head conversion because im sure i will need to do something on the motor so when i pull it out i might do that depending on how much it will cost.

Yes, but would really recommend getting the thing re-mapped and tuned.

Try to find a DE head first as its already n/a. The DET head will work but getting the cam timing changed would be beneficial.

Would work but there is more work involved doing a '26 head swap. These heads also have a bit of a heating problem, they get to hot to quick. Dont worry about a '26 head swap because:
1- Too expensive for what it is, for a n/a
2- The 25 and 26 head are pretty much the same, very little in it
3- good luck finding a wrecker that will split a 26 head from the block

Any competent jap wreckers. The absoloute most I would pay for a 25 head is $1300 cause I have seen good ones at the wreckers for $1100. Anymore than that, walk away. Make sure you if you get injectors with it as well, that they come with pintle caps cause they cant be had for love or money in oz.

RB25??? the turbo.

Extractors-no
inlet and plenum-no. The 25 inlet and plenum is bigger than the '30 so it flows better anyway.
Hope this helps
I have converted my RB30 to the RB25de head. The head bolts straight on. 8)
You need to get your extractors or exhaust manifold modified to suit.
The plenum as PSI 86 said is bigger in all regards. Once bolted on it is alot closer to your brake booster.
As PSI 86 said make sure you get the injectors. For that matter you should get the whole lot from the head up. Fuel rail, Coil pack, Wiring loom, Radiator hoses.
You will definately need to get the RB25 ECU. But get the chip
re-programed as every engine is different.
While you are at it you should get all you bottom end bearings and seals done and new pistons/rings and get your cylinders honed atleast.
The RB25 also uses 2 oil pressure guages so make sure you have both.
You need to change the oil pump aswell cause the RB30 is not up to the challenge.
Oops one more thing you need to get AFM aswell.
The gearbox, tailshalf, and diff should be fine with the extra power by the way.
If you wanna know any more just ask. I also have some pics.
Good luck

thanks vl666 and psi 86, all this info is alot of help.
hey vl666 when you did this swap what compression ratiop did you end up with, i know that if you use the rb30 internals it drops to about 8.3 and if you mix and match the pistons off the rb25 and the rods off the rb30 you end up with about 10.5.
also what your saying is that i basicaaly cannot use anything off the rb30 setup on the new one with the rb25 head.
i need a new afm plenum, inlet, exhaust, everything.

I am not sure what pistons or rods the mechanic used. I do know that he had to get the pistons flown in from Japan. The set he had were fractured - could have been very nasty. They were about $1200 in total
My compression is 10.9. This is why I have realy good torque not just power.
In regards to using bits off the RB30 the only thing you can use is the air tube running across the top of the engine but you need a bigger diameter tube at the AFM. Not much but enough not to fit the original.
Anything else :?:

I have done an RB25 head swap. The head cost me $600 with manifolds and the regular crap. I used a VVT head cause thats what was cheap. It cost me $90 to get modified to bolt to the RB30 block. This included Reshaping a coolant gallery (Feeds the coolant outlet pipe), blocking the VVT oil pressure feed, re-drilling into oil galleries to lube inlet cam main bearing. Its all sweet now and I'm trying to find custom manifolds and a turbo to go on.
Its worth the effort man. Its not that hard if you think about it a bit.

How long ago was this ???
You shoud not have to change anything. The RB25 head bolts straight on. No drilling or welding of galleries is needed, apart from the second tensionor pulley on the front of the engine.
Something is not right :?
The RB20 was the only Head that could not be bolted staright on.
Are you sure you did not get an RB20 Head ????????

I'm pretty sure the '26 wont bolt straight on to a '30.
The RB20 definately does not bolt on I have an article here about it. Some people did this conversion before the RB25 came out. The RB25 and RB26 are pretty much identicle. So it should be the same and bolt straight on.
Stockcalais has something though, Changes have to be made if you get the turbo head on either RB25 or RB26.
So that is where the difference is.
Make sense :?
Yeah the 25 head bolts straight on as mentioned. The 26 head does fit perfectly to the 30 block, however some welding and drilling is required so the galleries and water chanels line up and flow.
The 26 head has a bit of a heat dissapation problem as well, heats up way too quickly. Dont bother with a 26 head if its for a n/a, save your cash and work the 25 head - port job etc.
