Would like your thoughts on somethings. (Yes, i did a search) I have noisy lifters, and when i took it to a mechanic recently, he suggested doing an engine flush, and/or using thinner oil. What is an engine flush, is it kinds like giving the car an emema? Would the thinner oil be alright, (currently using Castrol GTX)? Or do i need to spend lots of money and get new lifters? Excuse my ignorance, i am still learning. THanks. Kane

An engine flush is just putting some stuff through it to remove all the sludge buildup, etc. I'm not sure why the thinner oil idea works, but it does.

I went to AMCAP and bought top end cleaner from them. a bottle of stuff u mix at a set ratio. i forgot its exact name, but its the holden one. I've tried all sorts of things to quieten my lifters, but i put this through last week and had the timing belt, etc. done yesterday, along with a full service. they aren't even noisy on a cold start now! They were never that bad tho, just intermittent even when warm.

I use to experience the ticking noise in my atmo Calais, like most of you, but mine was actually fixed by pulling out om injectors and just giving them a decent clean. I think you find its injectors not lifters.

I changed to oil over today, and it seems to be working (as in not ticking as much). Still does when first started. Will have to give it a few days then will know better. Thanks for your input guys. Kane

you can tell if its injectors because it will be a constant tick tick tick tick tick tick tick and it doesnt sound like a metally sound. whereas the lifters usualy come in and out varying in volume and pitch and also sound very metally. Also if you arent disorientated :P you should be able to hear where the noise is actually coming from by putting your ear around the motor. In my N.A i have noisy lifters (especially on cold start) but they come in and out while warm too and i also have 1 ticky injector.....i will be running engine flush in the motor for about 5 days starting tomorrow (driving VERY carefully, not reving the motor past say 2500) when i really need to go driving....then ill do a full oil change and put thinner oil in, this hopefully should fix the problem a bit....

i had a ticking noise. It was a gudgeon pin. doubt this would be your problem. instead of a tick tick tick it was more like tick--------tick tick----tick----tick tick tick tick. Intermitant. It was caused from a dodgy head job lol.

Morgz, i did an engine flush too, a Nulon one, but i on;y had to run the engine for 15mins (i guess your flush is more heavy duty?) Well since i did the flush, and changed to thinner oil, Castrol 10w/40, i have only got a few ticks when i first start the car. So hopefully it will stay this way. Kane

Mines a professional non-retail one which i used. I still have it in my car at the moment driving very carefully (not getting it too hot or anything) and ill be doing the oil change on friday by running the same flush in it for 30 mins at idle then changing. This will definantly give it a good go over, you could do it with any engine flush but remember to drive carefully, NO lead footing otherwise you could cause more trouble than its worth.... and yes you are supposed to only run the engine flush in at idle for 15-30 mins.... But its perfectly safe running it in for a few days to get a MUCH better full on clean, it helps clean out your oil pickup cuz they get clogged real bad....The oil i will be using when i change is Shell Helix Plus - 15W-50.

Damn! I hated that ticking noise so bad that I replaced all my lifters just recently. Got them at cost tho. If you can't get them cheap you'll be up for a fortune. Unless of course you figure out exactly which lifters it is using a sonic amplification device (big screwdriver) and replace only those lifters making the noise. I found that penrite oil quietened up the noise, but in the end my car sounded like it was about to die. Funny how your car will tick and sound sick as crap, then you blow someone off the lights and the noise will subside.

Hmmmmm i did my oil change today after running all the engine flush through it......The lifters are still noisy, they especially come in at high revs but at idle they are in and out even when warm....well i cant afford to replace them as yet so i guess ill have to leave em..... :?
